Registration is required. There is no charge for attendance or parking. You may need snowshoes. \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided nature walk and survey training session with SLELO PRISM at the stunning Salmon River Falls Unique Area in Richland\, NY\, where we will focus on the American Beech tree and its newest nemesis: Beech Leaf Disease! You can make a difference by helping scientists track the spread of this disease. \nThis walk is open to all ages. There is no fee for parking or to attend. Registration is required for all to receive important updates and weather-related cancellations. \nWe’ll gather in the parking area before heading out on the Upper Falls Trail\, a scenic one-mile path along the north side of the river to Dam Road. Along the way\, enjoy breathtaking views of the gorge and the iconic 100-foot waterfall. \nYou’ll first learn how to identify American Beech trees and all about how they play an important role in our Tug Hill forests. The 110-foot Salmon River Falls and the scenic gorge are the popular attractions on this wonderful parcel of state land. \nThis is the third of five public outings to be hosted by THTLT and SLELO PRISM from October 2024 through February 2025. Upcoming walks will take place at the Trenton Greenbelt Trails (Holland Patent) in January\, and Forest Park (Camden) in February. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. We’ll walk off trail in some areas to examine American Beech trees and learn how to report the absence or presence of BLD in the field using the mobile app iMapInvasives. You can then use your knowledge to survey Beech trees anywhere you find them when outdoors and report what you see. \nPrior to attending\, participants should follow these steps: \n\nVideo Tutorial \nMake a Free iMapInvasives User Account \nDownload the Free iMapInvasives Mobile App \n\nThere is a state-wide effort to track the spread of beech leaf disease. Beech leaf disease (BLD) is a tree disease that causes leaf deformities and leads to mortality in native and ornamental beech tree species. BLD symptoms appear in the leaves and include striping\, curling\, or a leathery texture. These signs may be visible year-round\, as some beech trees may hold their leaves in winter. Stripes are most noticeable on the underside of leaves and you may see them by looking up into the canopy or holding branches up to the light. \nBLD is believed to be caused by the nematode Litylenchus crenatae mccannii.  It is unknown whether the nematode causes all of the damage\, or if it is associated with another pathogen such as a bacteria\, fungus\, or virus. SUMMARY:Evening Bird Walk at Salmon River Falls Unique Area
DESCRIPTION:Relax and look for birds with us! Join us for a relaxing evening bird walk at Salmon River Falls Unique Area on Falls Rd between Orwell and Altmar in northeast Oswego County. Owned by New York State\, the Salmon River Falls Unique Area encompasses 112 acres of land\, with the 110-foot Salmon River Falls and the scenic gorge being the popular attractions there. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot for introductions\, then take the easy walk along the top of the gorge rim to the top of the falls\, stopping at viewpoints along the way. As we walk\, we’ll share tips for finding\, identifying and observing spring and summer birds.  This will be an easy\, slow walk on a wide forest trail with frequent stops. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and/or muddy\, and bring along some insect repellent\, just in case.
