SUMMARY:How Can I Protect Hemlock Trees from the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid?
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED TO A LATER DATE DUE TO PROBABILITY OF HEAVY SNOW AND UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS. Please stay tuned for a rescheduled date. Apologies for any inconvenience. \nJoin us for a guided walk at the James A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd.\, Watertown (located in the Town of Rutland) and learn to recognize and report Hemlock Woolly Adelgid HWA (or the lack thereof) – an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. This is the first of multiple informational survey outings we’ll be holding in the Tug Hill region this winter. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. Trainers will help participants learn how to identify the Eastern Hemlock\, survey for HWA and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). This first session will also be attended by WPBS Watertown\, as the station is putting together a piece on SLELO PRISM’s training and monitoring program with partners. Attendees can opt out of being on camera if desired. \nPrior to attending\, participants should follow these steps: \n\nVideo Tutorial \nMake a Free iMapInvasives User Account \nDownload the Free iMapInvasives Mobile App \n\n  \nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a guided walk in the woods\, and learn to recognize and report the newest threat to American Beech Trees: Beech Leaf Disease (BLD). Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust (THTLT)\, the St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM)\, and NYS DEC Forest Health Specialist Maria MoskaLee will lead the program. \nEvent Details\n\nTuesday\, September 20th\n1pm-3pm\nJoseph A Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\nRegistration is required no later than 8 pm on Monday\, September 19th.\n\nBLD is spreading rapidly across the Northeastern U.S. and Canada\, affecting and killing both native and ornamental beech tree species. BLD has only been discovered in recent years. In 2022\, it has been found in 14 new counties in New York\, for a total of 35 infected counties. It was recently found in Oswego County in the SLELO region\, and nearby on the southwestern edge of the Adirondacks. \nPrior to attending\, participants should follow these steps to be able to report observations and aid state-wide early detection efforts: \n\nMake a Free iMapInvasives User Account \nDownload the Free iMapInvasives Mobile App \n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Tug Hill Soggy Sneaker 5K
DESCRIPTION:** The deadline to register for this event is Saturday\, April 17th** \nDust off your sneakers and join us for the Tug Hill Soggy Sneaker 5K trail race on Saturday\, April 24th at 9:00 am at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary in Rutland. \nThis challenging trail race consists mostly of single-track wooded trails that will take you across many streams and wildlife areas. You will traverse foot bridges\, log ladder bridges\, and water crossings while gaining over 345’ of elevation. As the location is an active wildlife sanctuary\, expect terrain that accommodates wildlife habitat. Held in late April\, this race could be mostly snow covered\, or wet and leafy spring mud trails (that’s part of the excitement)! \nThe Race will begin at 9am\, and will follow in waves every 10 minutes (10 runners per wave) as to accommodate social distancing guidelines. There is no time limit and this course is walker friendly. While we love your furry friends\, please leave them at home on race day. Virtual participation is welcome. All registered runners both virtual and in person will receive a custom Tug Hill Soggy Sneaker pint glass. \nIf you are an Employer or a Team Sponsor please send a list of the names\, addresses and phone numbers of your team members to lgibbs@TugHillTomorrow.org along with a check made payable to Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust to P.O. Box 6063 Watertown\, NY 13601 rather than registering online. \nRegister Here!
