SUMMARY:Forest Hike on the Tug Hill Traverse Trail
DESCRIPTION:Come experience the peace of a deep woods hike in the heart of Tug Hill\, guided by Cindy Stewart of the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK)! This hike will start at the northern trailhead for the Tug Hill Traverse Trail in the Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area (Tug Hill WMA) east of Barnes Corners in the Town of Montague. We will hike south for about an hour\, or as long as hikers wish\, then return. \nRegistration is required\, as we will send details with a reminder to attendees closer to the date of the hike. There is no fee to attend or for parking. \nThe parking spot near the trailhead (43.69494343°N\, 75.65266844°W) is not marked. The trailhead itself is approximately a 45-minute drive from Watertown and a 25-minute drive from Lowville. \nCindy Stewart will meet attendees to caravan to the trailhead at these times and locations: \n9:15 am – Tug Hill State Forest Parking Lot\, 25841 NYS Rte 177\, Rodman\, and \n9:35 am – The Montague Inn\, 6765 Sears Pond Rd\, Lowville  \nThere may still be winter debris here and there along the trail\, as crews haven’t begun cleanup yet. Please check the weather for Montague before heading out and dress appropriately. Lightweight long pants and shirt sleeves are recommended. You’ll need good hiking shoes\, water\, maybe a small snack\, a brimmed hat and insect repellent. Bring a favorite walking stick if you’d like! \nTHTLT and ADK volunteers have been working for many years with multiple property owners to create and maintain this marked foot trail generally following the East Branch of Fish Creek from its headwaters as it flows south. Over ten miles of the trail have been completed\, from Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area (Tug Hill WMA) in the Town of Montague to beyond the Michigan Mills Road in the Town of West Turin. \nTrail work season begins in June with maintenance on the marked trail and clearing of the next leg south. Upon completion\, the trail will span approximately 20 gorgeous miles and have a southern trailhead near Osceola. DESCRIPTION:Help us make progress on a historic Tug Hill hiking route – the Tug Hill Traverse Trail – and count yourself a vital part of the effort! \nTwice a month\, from June to September\, volunteers meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections of the trail as well as clear and mark remaining sections. With over 10 miles completed\, eventually the full trail will cover approximately 20 miles\, from Montague to Osceola\, through the amazing and remote core forest\, headwaters of the East Branch of Fish Creek. \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, a brimmed hat\, lightweight long pants and shirt sleeves\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill.
