SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Walk\, Talk & Survey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Forest Park\, 10-24 Ripley Rd\, Camden\, NY on Thursday\, March 5th from 10:00 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). Registration is required. There is no charge for attendance or parking. You may need snowshoes. \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. If weather should turn severe and the event require rescheduling\, all registrants will be contacted by phone and email. Set in her forest garden on Wellesley Island\, author and host Dani Baker shares seasonal tasks\, plant selection\, ways to attract beneficial creatures\, and gardening tips and tricks. Dani is co-owner of Cross Island Farms and the Enchanted Edible Forest and has visited many Tug Hill libraries in past years with wisdom from her book The Home Scale Forest Garden. Now she will share even more in this locally-produced series. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a quiet forest walk (and/or snowshoe) at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd\, Watertown\, on Saturday\, March 21st to look and listen for owls. Along the way we’ll look for additional animal signs and learn about how animals navigate and thrive at night. Registration is required. There are no fees for attendance or parking. \nWe’ll gather at 6:30 pm in the parking lot for an introduction\, then walk a trail loop in the forest\, experiencing deepening twilight as we walk. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, March 26th\, 6:00 – 7:30 pm for our first 2026 Tug Hill Book Club meeting. LOCATION (Changed): The NEST at 132 Franklin St.\, Watertown\, NY. Parking is streetside.\n\n\nWe are a friendly\, informal group who like to read mostly (but not only) non-fiction books about animals\, natural history\, cultural history and environmental issues happening in or applicable to the Tug Hill region.  The Tug Hill Book club meets at 6 pm on the fourth Thursday of every other month beginning in March. We alternate gathering locations between a Watertown and Lowville site for each gathering. All meetings are hybrid so all can attend in whatever way works best for them – location directions and an online link is provided to all prior to each meeting. \n\n\nTwo books are suggested for each discussion. Members can choose to read one or both books based on their interest and reading time available. Join in when you’d like for whatever books you’d like – there’s no pressure to read for every gathering.
