DESCRIPTION:Our birds have been busy this spring! Join us on Saturday\, May 31st\, 11:00 am\, at the Ainsworth Memorial Library in Sandy Creek (6064 S. Main St.) to celebrate our feathered friends. We’ll learn about what makes birds different from other animals\, share some bird identification and birding tips\, maybe play a little bird bingo\, and go for a neighborhood bird walk to look and listen for birds nearby. Our time together will feature fun\, hands-on activities from the Tug Hill Explorer Bird Backpack\, available for borrowing from the library. \nYou may want to add Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s free eBird (checklist keeper) and/or Merlin (bird ID) apps to your smart phone prior to the program. SUMMARY:May 2025 Tug Hill Book and Beverage Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, May 29th\, we’ll hold our first Book and Beverage Club gathering to discuss two books focused on forests in honor of Arbor Day! You can choose to read one or both of these selections according to your preference. We will meet in hybrid form – in person with an online option – with the online link emailed to all registrants closer to May 29th\, along with a beverage recipe suggestion.  In-person meeting location is the Lewis County Historical Society\, 7552 South State Street\, Lowville. If you’d like to join those who have already signed up\, please register below! \nThe books we are reading for May 29th are: 1) How to Love a Forest by Ethan Tapper and 2) Tug Hill Country by Harold E. Samson \nIn How to Love a Forest\, author Ethan Tapper\, Chittendon County Forester (VT) asks: what does it mean to live in a time in which ecosystems are in retreat and extinctions rattle the bones of the earth? How do we respond to the harmful legacies of the past? How do we use our species’ incredible power to heal rather than to harm? How do we reach towards a better future? This book is not in local libraries yet\, but is available online from a number of booksellers. \nIn Tug Hill Country\, Harold Samson’s first Tug Hill volume\, he describes this magnificent area of hardwood ridges\, stands of evergreen\, rock-strewn pastureland\, sliced every so often by the gorge of a roaring stream as having a mind of its own – as do the people who call it home. Tales from the early to mid-20th century give us a glimpse of past times\, maybe leading to a better understanding of Tug Hill’s present. This book is out of print but is widely available at local libraries throughout the Tug Hill region. \nAll registered will also receive an online meeting link by email shortly before the meeting date to join in online from home or another location if preferred. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Spring Nature Walk at French Settlement Road Public Conservation Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a leisurely 1.5-mile guided spring nature walk at the French Settlement Road PCA\, 3836 French Settlement Road\, Lorraine\, NY. We’ll look for all kinds of cool springtime natural wonders along the way through rolling meadow and forest habitat and along streams and beaver ponds. \nThe French Settlement Road PCA’s 125 acres feature old field meadows\, mixed hardwood forests\, streams\, beaver ponds and wetlands that support a wide variety of plants and animals all year long. Historic farmstead sties\, stone wall remnants\, apple trees and more are evidence of the land’s agricultural past. The land was donated to THTLT by Dr. Marvin Reimer for people to enjoy as a protected nature area. The property’s trails are open dawn to dusk daily for hiking\, snowshoeing\, cross-country skiing and wildlife observation. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:Let’s go birding! Look\, listen and learn about birds by joining us for a relaxing evening bird walk at Constable Hall\, 5909 John St\, Constableville\, NY\, on Friday\, May 16th at 6:30 pm. \nConstable Hall is a historic house museum located in the Adirondack Tug Hill Region of Lewis County\, New York. This Federal style limestone mansion was built in the early 1800’s by members of the Constable family. The Hall’s beautiful garden and grounds have been meticulously cared for\, with a variety of habitats that attract a wide variety of birds. \nAfter meeting in the historic servants’ quarters building\, we’ll head outside for an easy\, slow walk looking and listening for birds. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and/or muddy\, and bring along some insect repellent\, just in case. \nYou may also want to add Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s free eBird (checklist keeper) and/or Merlin (bird ID) apps to your smart phone. DESCRIPTION:Please note: The date for this outing has been changed from Saturday\, April 5th to SATURDAY\, APRIL 19th due to the overly soggy weather forecast! \nCome and enjoy a twilight walk and owl prowl in the woods with THTLT on Saturday\, April 19th\, 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary (31241 Middle Road\, Watertown\, NY)\, located it the Town of Rutland. Learn about the ways animals are adapted to a low-light lifestyle\, look for all types of animal tracks and signs\, and look and listen for owls! \nThis is the fourth and final owl prowl in our 2025 series! \nOur outing will begin in the parking lot with brief introductions. Then we’ll take a walk on the woods trails looking and to listening for owls and other animals/animal signs. \nBring along a flashlight or headlamp\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy waterproof boots or shoes. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, March 27th\, we’ll hold our first Book and Beverage Club gathering to discuss two books focused on owls in honor of this time in the year\, when our native owls are actively selecting nesting sites and starting families. If you’d like to join those who have already signed up\, please register below! \nThe books we are reading for March 27th are Hoot\, by Carl Hiaasen\, and What an Owl Knows\, by Jennifer Ackerman. Readers can choose one of these titles or read both books. Hoot is a young adult novel about two boys who work to protect burrowing owls from a planned development in Florida. What an Owl Knows is a non-fiction\, engagingly written book all about owl adaptations and behavior that incorporates information from recent research using innovative research techniques. \nAn in-person meeting location will be announced in early March – sent by email to all registered and posted on the land trust’s Facebook and Instagram pages. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Valentine’s Day guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Camden’s Forest Park on Friday\, January 14th from 10 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees on and off the trail\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nParticipants should dress for the weather and expect some off-trail walking in order to survey trees. A ski pole or walking stick can help with walking off-trail as well as reaching branches above you. Sturdy waterproof footwear is recommended. If there is snow\, you are welcome to bring your snowshoes along. You might also want some water and/or a snack on hand. \nThe walk will take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. Upcoming walks will take place at the Trenton Greenbelt Trails (Holland Patent) in January\, and Forest Park (Camden) in February. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nGreat Bear Recreation Area\, located at Great Bear Road along County Route 57 south of Fulton\, is a public recreation area open year-round dawn to dusk for non-motorized recreation. The area host 11 miles of rustically maintained trails\, with wooden bridges over streams. Parking is free. DESCRIPTION:Have ever wondered what it would be like to be hiking alongside trees over one hundred years old? Come along with us as we take an autumn hike to explore one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. Naturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will lead this off-trail hike over moderately difficult terrain inside land designated as New York State Forest Preserve. This outing is open to the public at no charge\, thanks to our generous donors. Registration is required. \nPlan on wearing sturdy waterproof boots. Bring along your bag lunch/snacks and water. DESCRIPTION:Join THTLT and SLELO PRISM at the Salmon River Falls Unique Area\, Town of Orwell\, on Friday\, September 20th from 10 am to Noon to learn about and survey for Beech Leaf Disease (BLD). We’ll walk off trail in some areas to examine American Beech trees and learn how to report the absence or presence of BLD in the field using the mobile app iMapInvasives. You can then use your knowledge to survey Beech trees anywhere you find them when outdoors and report what you see. \nPrior to attending\, participants should follow these steps: \n\nVideo Tutorial \nMake a Free iMapInvasives User Account \nDownload the Free iMapInvasives Mobile App \n\nThere is a state-wide effort to track the spread of beech leaf disease. Beech leaf disease (BLD) is a tree disease that causes leaf deformities and leads to mortality in native and ornamental beech tree species. BLD symptoms appear in the leaves and include striping\, curling\, or a leathery texture. These signs may be visible year-round\, as some beech trees may hold their leaves in winter. Stripes are most noticeable on the underside of leaves and you may see them by looking up into the canopy or holding branches up to the light. \nBLD is believed to be caused by the nematode Litylenchus crenatae mccannii.  It is unknown whether the nematode causes all of the damage\, or if it is associated with another pathogen such as a bacteria\, fungus\, or virus. DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club for a relaxing Tuesday Trails walk on the new trail loop at our French Settlement Road Public Conservation Area near Lorraine! The 1.5-mile trail loop travels through field and forest and past a series of small beaver ponds. The trail is mostly flat\, with a small rise and downhill to start. There is one unavoidable muddy spot\, so shoes that can get dirty are recommended. We’ll meet in the parking lot at 6 pm.
