Bring along a flashlight – we start in the light\, but it may be quite dark by the time we return to the parking lot. If you have a red light setting or red filter for your flashlight\, it will help to retain our night vision.  We’ll have snacks and extra water available for anyone who needs it. \nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be hiking among trees almost 200 hundred years old? Come along with us as we take an autumn hike exploring one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. Naturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will lead this off-trail hike over moderately difficult terrain inside land designated as New York State Forest Preserve. This outing is open to the public at no charge\, thanks to our generous donors. Registration is required. \nMeet at the parking area on the Osceola-West Leyden Road (County Route 46) just west of the bridge over the Salmon River (street address approximately 1999 Osceola Road\, West Leyden\, NY 13489; Google Coordinates 43.489818\, -75.652058). NOTE: THERE IS NO GPS RECEPTION IN OSCEOLA. Please print the directions/maps we send you prior to heading out to the hike. You should wear sturdy waterproof boots\, dress for the weather and bring along your bag lunch/snacks and water. SUMMARY:Traverse Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Twice a month\, from June through September\, volunteers will meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections as well as clear and mark the remaining sections of the historic Tug Hill Traverse Trail. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided nature walk and survey training session with SLELO PRISM at the stunning Salmon River Falls Unique Area in Richland\, NY\, where we will focus on the American Beech tree and its newest nemesis: Beech Leaf Disease! You can make a difference by helping scientists track the spread of this disease. \nThis walk is open to all ages. There is no fee for parking or to attend. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. We’ll take our third and final seasonal relaxing evening bird walk at Constable Hall (5909 John St\, Constableville\, NY) on Friday\, July 25th at 6:30 pm. \nConstable Hall is a historic house museum located in the Adirondack Tug Hill Region of Lewis County\, New York. This Federal style limestone mansion was built in the early 1800’s by members of the Constable family. The Hall’s beautiful garden and grounds have been meticulously cared for\, with a variety of habitats that attract a wide variety of birds. \nAfter meeting in the historic servants’ quarters building\, we’ll head outside for an easy\, slow walk looking and listening for birds. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and/or muddy\, and bring along some insect repellent\, just in case. \nYou may also want to add Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s free eBird (checklist keeper) and/or Merlin (bird ID) apps to your smart phone. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 24th\, we’ll hold our third Book and Beverage Club gathering to discuss two water-themed books in honor of all of the Tug Hill wetlands we love and conserve! You can choose to read one or both of these selections according to your preference. We will meet in hybrid form – in person with an online option. Everyone registered will receive an online meeting link by email shortly before the meeting date if they prefer to join in online from another location\, along with a suggested drink recipe. SUMMARY:Traverse Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Twice a month\, from June through September\, volunteers will meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections as well as clear and mark the remaining sections of the historic Tug Hill Traverse Trail. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek.
