SUMMARY:Volunteer Trail Day at the Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:  \nWant to lend a hand and get some fresh air? Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust invites you to join in a trail maintenance day on Saturday\, June 5th\, 2021 at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31827 Middle Road\, Rutland from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in honor of National Trails Day. Families and children are encouraged to attend! Spend 30 minutes\, an hour or more with us – all help is appreciated. \nWe’ll be clearing the sanctuary trails of winter debris\, picking up litter\, and making sure everything is in good condition for hiking. Please wear sturdy boots and comfortable work clothes. Pack a brown bag lunch\, water in a reusable bottle\, sunscreen\, bug dope\, and a bee sting kit if appropriate. Bring your favorite loppers and gloves. THTLT will provide extra tools and gloves for volunteers. All skill levels are welcome – we have a lot of work! Trash bags\, gloves\, water\, and snacks will be provided \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is now closed \nPerfect for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. A great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum \nThis spring’s official observation week is May 17th through May 21st. \nTeams fill their feeders no later than April 30th in order to allow the birds to find the food source. Then each team observes the feeders daily May 17th-21st and record the type and number of birds observed. After watching the feeder for the entire week\, tally the results and report your findings back to us. \nThe Tug Hill Bird Quest program is designed to help students and families learn more about the birds that call Tug Hill home. THTLT provides free birdseed and bird feeders\, donated by regional businesses\, to participating teams\, along with a bird identification poster\, data sheets and a free Tug Hill natural history guidebook. After May 21st\, THTLT will collect and compile the team tallies\, and provide a complete report to participating teams and event sponsors. \nRegister Here!

SUMMARY:Tug Hill Soggy Sneaker 5K
DESCRIPTION:** The deadline to register for this event is Saturday\, April 17th** \nDust off your sneakers and join us for the Tug Hill Soggy Sneaker 5K trail race on Saturday\, April 24th at 9:00 am at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary in Rutland. \nThis challenging trail race consists mostly of single-track wooded trails that will take you across many streams and wildlife areas. You will traverse foot bridges\, log ladder bridges\, and water crossings while gaining over 345’ of elevation. As the location is an active wildlife sanctuary\, expect terrain that accommodates wildlife habitat. Held in late April\, this race could be mostly snow covered\, or wet and leafy spring mud trails (that’s part of the excitement)! \nThe Race will begin at 9am\, and will follow in waves every 10 minutes (10 runners per wave) as to accommodate social distancing guidelines. There is no time limit and this course is walker friendly. While we love your furry friends\, please leave them at home on race day. Virtual participation is welcome. Masks are required.  \nWe’ll start in the parking lot at 31270 Middle Road\, in Rutland\, NY. Bring along a flashlight or headlamp\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy boots or shoes. If there is enough snow\, and you have them\, you are welcome to use snowshoes. SUMMARY:Guided Hike to learn how to help protect Hemlock Trees from Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:You can help protect Hemlock Trees from Invasive Species! Join us and the St. Lawrence-Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO-PRISM) for a guided hike to search for and learn how to report sightings of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (the invasive insect threatening Hemlock Trees) on Saturday\, March 13th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Trenton Greenbelt Trails near Barneveld.  \nHemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) kills hemlock trees. Hemlocks are a key tree species for healthy forests in the Tug Hill region and elsewhere\, and your efforts can make a difference in preventing the spread of this insect. During this field session\, you’ll learn how to identify Eastern Hemlock\, its role in the forest\, how to perform early detection surveys\, how to report observations using iMapInvasives mobile app\, and how to become a volunteer monitor for THTLT and SLELO. \nRegistration is required. Masks are mandatory\, and attendees will social distance in conjunction with COVID19 recommendations. We will be outside for the entire workshop\, so participants should dress for the weather \nRegister Here! \nAttendees are encouraged to make a free iMapInvasives user account and download the iMap mobile app prior to attending the hike. DESCRIPTION:Due to cold temperatures our January Owl Prowl will be move to Saturday\, February 6th. All those that have registered will be notified of the date change.  \nRegistration is currently full for this event\, however there are still spots remaining for our February outing. See February Owl Prowl event for details. \n\nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust (THTLT) invites you to come learn about and prowl for owls on at 4:30 pm at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary in Rutland. We’ll start by learning a bit about the owls we might encounter\, then take a twilight walk to listen and look! This year’s owl prowls are free for the public\, thanks to generous support from GYMO and Cross Island Farms. Registration is required no later than Friday\, January 29th. Attendance is limited. Masks are required. \nWe’ll start in the parking lot at 31270 Middle Road\, in Rutland\, NY. Bring along a flashlight or headlamp\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy boots or shoes. If there is enough snow\, and you have them\, you are welcome to use snowshoes. The land trust also has a limited number of snowshoes for children and adults available upon request for use during our outings.

DESCRIPTION:There’s nothing like fresh air to start the new year off right. Celebrate 2021’s arrival with a First Day Hike at Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust’s 140-acre Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary on Friday\, January 1st\, 2021 at 11:00 am. We will meet at the sanctuary parking lot on Middle Road\, Rutland. Depending on the weather\, we’ll hike\, ski and/or snowshoe together along the marked trails\, and finish up by 1:00 pm. Dress for the weather\, and bring along your cross-country skis or snowshoes if there is snow. Registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Let go of your worries during an easy paddle with Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust (THTLT) on Sunday\, August 16th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. as we explore St. Mary’s Pond in the Happy Valley Wildlife Management Area\, Oswego County. THTLT board member and skilled naturalist Bob McNamara will be our trip leader. We will be out on the pond rain or shine\, barring any severe weather threats. We may explore additional nearby ponds\, should time and interest allow. \nPaddlers will meet at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) kiosk on Churchill Road\, off County Route 26 on the southern boundary of Happy Valley WMA (Google coordinates: 43 deg 2’ 04.0”N 76 deg 02’ 02.3’W). Take the Parish exit off of I81\, and follow County Route 26 east. Turn north onto Churchill Road (opposite Crim Road). \nBring your kayak or canoe\, life vest (PFD)\, lunch/snacks\, water\, sunscreen\, and a facemask for times when distancing is not feasible. Life vests are required for all boaters. Participants will need to sign a standard questionnaire regarding COVID potential symptoms and exposures before we embark. \nRegister Today!

DESCRIPTION:Want to get outside safely and be creative? Help us rock the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday\, July 25th from 10 am to Noon. We’ll take a short hike\, paint some rocks to place on the trails and/or take home\, and read a story along the way. \nAttendance is limited\, and registration is required so that we may meet all distancing and COVID19 requirements for keeping everyone safe. Anyone over 2 years of age should wear a face-mask for the start of the program. Make sure and wear sturdy shoes (waterproof boots if conditions have been wet)\, dress for the weather\, and bring along some water and your insect/tick spray. DESCRIPTION:Landowners\, Cary Fassler and Deb Kahkejian will lead us along this moderate three mile hike of their trail system. You’ll experience forestland\, rolling meadows\, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife on this 970-acre Land Trust property\, protected by THTLT. \nWe’ll meet at the Fassler and Kahkejian residence at 398 State Route 69\, Williamstown\, NY (mailing address is Williamstown\, actual location is just east of Amboy). DESCRIPTION:Let’s celebrate the arrival of December! Head outside for a free\, family-friendly hike at the Development Authority of the North Country’s Murray Agricultural Heritage Trail in Rodman. We’ll get outside to enjoy the day\, then warm up inside DANC’s Murray Center building at the end of the hike\, with hot cocoa and snacks provided by the land trust. \nHikers will meet at the Murray Trail parking area on NYS Route 177 at 10 am. The parking lot is located on the south side of the road\, west of the official entrance for the Development Authority and east of the Village of Rodman. Look for the brown Murray Trails trailhead sign\, our THTLT sandwich board sign\, and the white building set back from the parking area. Wear your sturdy waterproof boots (gaiters optional)\, or bring your cross-country skis or snowshoes\, and dress in layers appropriate for the weather. SUMMARY:Osceola Old Growth Forest Hike
DESCRIPTION:**This date is the rescheduled event date \nIf you have ever wondered how large trees over one hundred years old can be and love fall foliage\, then this is the hike for you. We invite you to explore one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill as naturalist and outdoorsman\, Bob McNamara leads this hike. Plan on wearing sturdy boots\, as we will be doing off-trail hiking over moderately difficult terrain. The payoff for your efforts will be experiencing trees that have grown uninterrupted for hundreds of years. This hike is free and open to the community. \nWe will meet at the Osceola Tug Hill XC Ski Center (1486 Osceola Rd.\, Camden\, NY 13316) parking area and we’ll carpool to the site from there. Please note that there is no cell phone reception at this location\, so you will need to screen shot your map and directions before heading out\, or use a paper map. DESCRIPTION:Do mushrooms intrigue you? Join us and Indian River Lakes Conservancy (IRLC) as we explore the fungi found at IRLC’s Baker Woods Preserve\, Natural Bridge. Volunteer expert\, Steven Daniel will lead this free\, family-friendly program. The Baker Woods Preserve includes extensive river and wetland habitats\, a red pine plantation in transition\, and native coniferous and hardwood forests. \nTo get to the parking lot from NYS Route 3 in Natural Bridge\, turn south on Depot Street. Follow Depot Street as it veers to the left (crossing the Indian River) and becomes Factory Rd (about 1/4 mile). Go approximately 2 miles\, up a little hill past a white and then a red house on the right with a barn on the left\, and then past another white house.
