SUMMARY:Forest Hike on the Tug Hill Traverse Trail
DESCRIPTION:Come experience the peace of a deep woods hike in the heart of Tug Hill\, guided by Cindy Stewart of the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK)! This hike will start at the northern trailhead for the Tug Hill Traverse Trail in the Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area (Tug Hill WMA) east of Barnes Corners in the Town of Montague. We will hike south for about an hour\, or as long as hikers wish\, then return. \nRegistration is required\, as we will send details with a reminder to attendees closer to the date of the hike. There is no fee to attend or for parking. \nThe parking spot near the trailhead (43.69494343°N\, 75.65266844°W) is not marked. The trailhead itself is approximately a 45-minute drive from Watertown and a 25-minute drive from Lowville. \nCindy Stewart will meet attendees to caravan to the trailhead at these times and locations: \n9:15 am – Tug Hill State Forest Parking Lot\, 25841 NYS Rte 177\, Rodman\, and \n9:35 am – The Montague Inn\, 6765 Sears Pond Rd\, Lowville  \nThere may still be winter debris here and there along the trail\, as crews haven’t begun cleanup yet. Please check the weather for Montague before heading out and dress appropriately. Lightweight long pants and shirt sleeves are recommended. You’ll need good hiking shoes\, water\, maybe a small snack\, a brimmed hat and insect repellent. Bring a favorite walking stick if you’d like! \nTHTLT and ADK volunteers have been working for many years with multiple property owners to create and maintain this marked foot trail generally following the East Branch of Fish Creek from its headwaters as it flows south. Over ten miles of the trail have been completed\, from Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area (Tug Hill WMA) in the Town of Montague to beyond the Michigan Mills Road in the Town of West Turin. \nTrail work season begins in June with maintenance on the marked trail and clearing of the next leg south. Upon completion\, the trail will span approximately 20 gorgeous miles and have a southern trailhead near Osceola. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 28\, 6:00 – 7:30 pm for our next Tug Hill Book Club meeting. Our in-person location will be St. Drogo’s Coffee and Bake House\, 7514 South State Street\, Lowville. \nWe are a friendly\, informal group who like to read mostly (but not only) non-fiction books about animals\, natural history\, cultural history and environmental issues happening in or applicable to the Tug Hill region.  The Tug Hill Book club meets at 6 pm on the fourth Thursday of every other month beginning in March. We alternate gathering locations between a Watertown and Lowville site for each gathering. All meetings are hybrid so all can attend in whatever way works best for them – location directions and an online link is provided to all prior to each meeting. \nTwo books are suggested for each discussion. Members can choose to read one or both books based on their interest and reading time available. DESCRIPTION:Young and old are encouraged to join us for a bird walk followed by a rousing game of Bird Bingo at Constable Hall on Tuesday\, May 5th\, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. We’ll explore the Hall’s many bird habitat areas to look and listen for birds while sharing birding tips\, tricks and birding apps that come in handy. There should be plenty of activity as the migratory birds are returning! Then we’ll rest and play a fun round or two of Bird Bingo to reinforce our learning about the differences in field markings of common birds and win prizes! \nThere is no fee for attendance or parking. SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Walk\, Talk & Survey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Salmon River Falls Unique Area\, 185 Falls Rd\, Richland\, NY on Friday\, March 20th from 10:00 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). Registration is required. There is no charge for attendance or parking. You may need snowshoes. \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. Dani is co-owner of Cross Island Farms and the Enchanted Edible Forest and has visited many Tug Hill libraries in past years with wisdom from her book The Home Scale Forest Garden. SUMMARY:Old Growth Forest Hike
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be hiking among trees almost 200 hundred years old? Come along with us as we take an autumn hike exploring one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. Naturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will lead this off-trail hike over moderately difficult terrain inside land designated as New York State Forest Preserve. This outing is open to the public at no charge\, thanks to our generous donors. Registration is required. \nMeet at the parking area on the Osceola-West Leyden Road (County Route 46) just west of the bridge over the Salmon River (street address approximately 1999 Osceola Road\, West Leyden\, NY 13489; Google Coordinates 43.489818\, -75.652058). NOTE: THERE IS NO GPS RECEPTION IN OSCEOLA. Please print the directions/maps we send you prior to heading out to the hike. You should wear sturdy waterproof boots\, dress for the weather and bring along your bag lunch/snacks and water. SUMMARY:Traverse Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Twice a month\, from June through September\, volunteers will meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections as well as clear and mark the remaining sections of the historic Tug Hill Traverse Trail. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek.
