SUMMARY:Evening Birding at the Murray Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a relaxing evening bird walk along the Douglas L. Murray Agricultural Heritage Trail\, Route 177\, Rodman\, NY. The trail has two loops totaling 1.6 miles which highlight the agricultural nature of the property surrounding the Development Authority of the North Country’s solid waste management facility. The Murray Trail is available for year-round\, non-motorized recreational use. The Murray Trail is named for former Development Authority board member and chairman\, and former THTLT board member\, Doug Murray. \nWe’ll meet at the parking area one-quarter mile north of the solid waste management facility main entrance on Route 177 in the Town of Rodman and gather for brief introductions and birding tips. We’ll then take an easy walk along the trails through field and forest looking and listening for birds\, with frequent stops. As we walk\, we’ll share more tips for finding\, identifying and observing spring and summer birds. \nSturdy shoes that can get wet are recommended\, as the trail often has very wet spots. Trails are mowed grass and forest footpaths. Bring along your binoculars and some insect repellent\, just in case. SUMMARY:Tug Hill Traverse Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:THIS WORKDAY HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO FRIDAY\, JUNE 14th \nTwice a month\, from June to September\, volunteers will meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections as well as clear and mark the remaining sections of the historic Tug Hill Traverse Trail. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south\, and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. Camp Zerbe is owned by Oswego County and is operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau\, division of Parks and Recreation. Oswego County has maintained and improved Camp Zerbe as a nature park as well as an educational and recreational resource for the citizens of Oswego County. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot for introductions\, then meander our way through open areas and along forested loop trails. We’ll make a stop at the dock area to survey what birds might be hanging out near Lake Lorraine\, too. This will be an easy\, slow walk through open grassy areas and forested trail habitats with frequent stops. DESCRIPTION:The Tug Hill Bird Quest is a perfect community science activity for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. It’s designed to help students and families within or near the Tug Hill region of New York State learn more about the birds that travel through and call Tug Hill home and is a great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. A free bird feeder\, birdseed and/or Tug Hill natural resource guide may be provided upon request and as available to teams requiring supplies in order to participate. \n\nRegister to participate no later than March 31st.\nReceive daily Bird of the Day emails with photos\, fun facts and identification tips April 1st through May 17th.\nTHTLT provides a free tally sheet for you to tally the birds that visit the feeders daily May 20th-24th and record the type and number of birds observed.\nStart adding seed to feeders any time before May 1st in order to allow the birds to find the food source.\nObserve your feeder station and record your observations every day May 20th through May 24th\, 2024.\nComplete and return your completed tally sheet no later than May 31st.\nA completed report will be sent out to participating teams and event sponsors the second week of June.\nEach team that returns a tally by May 31st is entered in a drawing to win a great pair of binoculars!\n\nFind Out More and Register here!

SUMMARY:Morning Bird Walk and Breeding Bird Survey
DESCRIPTION:THTLT and the North Country Bird Club will join Jeff Bolsinger\, New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III Northern Region Co-Coordinator\, for a morning bird walk at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd\, Watertown\, to learn about and survey for breeding birds at the sanctuary. The walk starts at 8:00 AM in the parking lot. Registrations are required\, space is limited. \nA Breeding Bird Atlas occurs every 20 years in New York for a five-year period. This third New York State atlas effort began in 2020\, and birders of all backgrounds are participating through 2024.  Breeding Bird Atlas surveys continue to improve understanding of changes in the distribution of breeding birds in New York State and provide the basis for more informed conservation and management of birds and their habitats on public and private lands. \nBird observations are entered into the NYS Breeding Bird Atlas portal on eBird free mobile app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology that allows online and offline collection of bird observations anywhere in the world. eBird is a free app\, and lets birders enter when\, where\, and how they went birding\, and then fill out a checklist of all the birds seen and heard during their outings. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary (31241 Middle Road\, Watertown\, NY). \nLearn about the ways animals are adapted to a low-light lifestyle\, look for all types of animal tracks and signs\, and look and listen for owls! \nOur outing will begin in the parking lot with a brief learning session to discuss animal adaptations and the owls we might encounter. Then we’ll take a walk on the woods trails to listen and look for owls\, and for activities along the way that explore how owls and other animals navigate in low to no light. \nBring along a flashlight or headlamp\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy waterproof boots or shoes. DESCRIPTION:THIS PROGRAM CANCELLED DUE TO NO SIGN UPS \nJoin us for a morning exploration at 9:00 am on Saturday\, March 9th of the Trenton Greenbelt trails\, 7905 Wood Rd\, Holland Patent\, NY. \nLocated in the Town of Trenton in northern Oneida County\, the Greenbelt is a combination of public and private lands protected from development pressures by voluntary agreements with multiple adjacent landowners. These landowners have generously allowed the public to access approximately three miles of marked ski and hiking trails which cross their land. \nThe trail system roams through mature forest and a unique area of sand plain\, with easy to moderate terrain. Depending on weather\, you may want to bring your snowshoes or cross-country skis for this outing. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk at Forest Park in Camden on Wednesday\, February 14th and learn to recognize and report Hemlock Woolly Adelgid HWA (or the lack thereof) – an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. This is the fourth of five informational survey outings being held in and near the Tug Hill region this winter in partnership with the St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM). \nThe following day\, Thursday\, February 15th\, is reserved as an alternate date in the case of weather that isn’t safe for travel. Please mark both dates on your calendar. We will hold the event if we get snow or a light rain and you will be notified of any changes prior to the event via the email you’ve provided. \nThe Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Walk and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk at the Trenton Greenbelt Trails\, 7905 Wood Rd\, Holland Patent\, NY on Friday\, January 26th and learn to recognize and report Hemlock Woolly Adelgid HWA (or the lack thereof) – an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. This is one of several survey outings being held in and near the Tug Hill region this winter in partnership with the St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM). \nWe will hold the event if we get a light snow or rain and you will be notified of any changes prior to the event via the email you’ve provided. \nThe Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. SUMMARY:2024 Bird Quest: Early Bird
DESCRIPTION:Perfect for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. A great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. \nEarly Bird Details\n\nSign up by December 31st.\nStart receiving free learning resources weekly\, beginning January 8th\, 2024. Resources include fun facts and learning activities to expand your understanding of and ability to identify the different types of birds you may see at or near your bird feeder this winter and spring.\nFill your feeder (no later than May 6th if new) to allow birds to find and start visiting your location.\nTally bird feeder observations May 20-24 with teams around the region.\n\nNo birding experience is required to participate! You’re free to contact us with questions about feeders and birds anytime. If you want\, we can schedule a virtual or in-person visit for your classroom or homeschool group as well. \nAll teams officially observe their feeders daily May 20th – 24th for up to 15 minutes a day and record the type and number of birds observed. After watching the feeder for the entire week\, they tally the results and report their findings back to us. \nThe Tug Hill Bird Quest program is designed to help students and families learn more about the birds that call Tug Hill home. All teams receive weekly Bird of the Day emails in April and May\, with Early Birds receiving additional resources January through April. \nA free tally sheet is provided for recording observations. Upon request\, a free bird identification poster\, Tug Hill Natural History Guide book\, and/or bird seed and a bird feeder may be provided to teams as available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Bird seed and feeders are donated to THTLT by regional businesses for teams needing them to participate in the Bird Quest.
