DESCRIPTION:Join THTLT and the St. Lawrence-Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management for a Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Walk and Talk outing on Friday\, January 17th\, 10 am –  Noon\, at the Trenton Greenbelt Trails\, 7905 Wood Road\, Holland Patent\, NY. Learn to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid invasive insect\, examine trees\, and report observations using your smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). Registration is required. There is no fee to attend. \nThe Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on can provide enough time to protect infested trees and help to stop the spread to new areas. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nSalmon River Falls Unique Area is owned and managed by New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation and encompasses 112 acres of land. The 110-foot Salmon River Falls and the scenic gorge are the popular attractions on this wonderful parcel of state land. \nThis is the third of five public outings to be hosted by THTLT and SLELO PRISM from October 2024 through February 2025. DESCRIPTION:Have ever wondered what it would be like to be hiking alongside trees over one hundred years old? Come along with us as we take an autumn hike to explore one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. Naturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will lead this off-trail hike over moderately difficult terrain inside land designated as New York State Forest Preserve. This outing is open to the public at no charge\, thanks to our generous donors. Registration is required. \nPlan on wearing sturdy waterproof boots. Bring along your bag lunch/snacks and water. DESCRIPTION:Join THTLT and SLELO PRISM at the Salmon River Falls Unique Area\, Town of Orwell\, on Friday\, September 20th from 10 am to Noon to learn about and survey for Beech Leaf Disease (BLD). We’ll walk off trail in some areas to examine American Beech trees and learn how to report the absence or presence of BLD in the field using the mobile app iMapInvasives. You can then use your knowledge to survey Beech trees anywhere you find them when outdoors and report what you see. \nPrior to attending\, participants should follow these steps: \n\nVideo Tutorial \nMake a Free iMapInvasives User Account \nDownload the Free iMapInvasives Mobile App \n\nThere is a state-wide effort to track the spread of beech leaf disease. Beech leaf disease (BLD) is a tree disease that causes leaf deformities and leads to mortality in native and ornamental beech tree species. BLD symptoms appear in the leaves and include striping\, curling\, or a leathery texture. These signs may be visible year-round\, as some beech trees may hold their leaves in winter. Stripes are most noticeable on the underside of leaves and you may see them by looking up into the canopy or holding branches up to the light. \nBLD is believed to be caused by the nematode Litylenchus crenatae mccannii.  It is unknown whether the nematode causes all of the damage\, or if it is associated with another pathogen such as a bacteria\, fungus\, or virus. DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club for a relaxing Tuesday Trails walk on the new trail loop at our French Settlement Road Public Conservation Area near Lorraine! The 1.5-mile trail loop travels through field and forest and past a series of small beaver ponds. The trail is mostly flat\, with a small rise and downhill to start. There is one unavoidable muddy spot\, so shoes that can get dirty are recommended. We’ll meet in the parking lot at 6 pm. Visuals and hands-on activities at frequent stops along the way will help everyone learn about how this site’s habitat is especially suited for these insect-eating night time animals\, and about how important role bats are for a healthy environment. \n\nPlants Make a Difference (easy\, uneven ground)\nTake a leisurely walk with Cierra Williams\, Horticulture and Natural Resources Educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County\, to learn about the native and invasive plants found here\, and the ways our habitat can be improved for pollinators. \n\n\n\nDuring these outings we will have a variety of fun activities for children who prefer not to hike\, featuring our Tug Hill Explorer Backpacks. \n\n\nEvent Registration & Lunch Preorder\n\nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust (THTLT) aims to protect the David S. Smith Public Conservation Area’s natural diversity\, while allowing for safe and enjoyable access for public recreation and environmental interpretation. Management plans include special consideration of habitat for New York State native or naturalized species\, especially threatened and endangered species. Also nearby is an additional 15 acres owned and protected by the Ontario Bays Initiative (OBI) that conserves additional critical bat habitat and contains a walking trail. \n\nTHTLT completed purchase of David S. Smith PCA’s 411 acres in 2022 through the Army Compatible Use Buffer (ACUB) Program\, partnering with the Army/Fort Drum and Ducks Unlimited. Adjacent lands were acquired from Con Tech Building Systems\, Inc. and Columbia LeRay\, LLC to comprise the full acreage. The land is generally flat with very shallow soils. In fact\, some outcrops of rock come right out of the ground. Evidence of past agricultural use can be found\, as well as areas of well-established forest. \nAs an organization dedicated to environmental conservation and stewardship\, Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust acknowledges the many Native People and tribes who were the original stewards of this land since time immemorial. Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust acknowledges the indigenous spirit of everything that is on and in the land. Native Peoples did not choose to leave this land\, and now we aim to uphold stewardship values and protect environmental diversity within our public conservation areas for current and future enjoyment of generations to come.

DESCRIPTION:Cancelled Due to Chance of Severe Weather \nJoin us for a relaxing evening bird walk at the Lowville Demonstration Forestry Area\, Route 812\, Dadville\, NY. The Lowville Forestry Demonstration Area is located on 98 acres at the former NYS Lowville Tree Nursery. The nursery was in operation from approximately 1923 to 1971 and during that time\, a total of 530 million seedlings were produced. A demonstration forest was created here by planting trees together in blocks based on species.The property also contains an arboretum with more than 400 species of native and non-native trees\, shrubs\, perennials and fruit trees. This area highlights hardy species that can grow in the northern New York climate. \nWe’ll meet at the parking area on Route 812 just south of the NYSDEC Region 6 suboffice. We’ll then take an easy walk along the trails through field and forest looking and listening for birds\, with frequent stops. As we walk\, we’ll share more tips for finding\, identifying and observing spring and summer birds. \nSturdy shoes that can get wet are recommended. Trails are mowed grass and footpaths on primarily flat terrain. Bring along your binoculars and some insect repellent\, just in case. Camp Zerbe is owned by Oswego County and is operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau\, division of Parks and Recreation. Oswego County has maintained and improved Camp Zerbe as a nature park as well as an educational and recreational resource for the citizens of Oswego County. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot for introductions\, then meander our way through open areas and along forested loop trails. We’ll make a stop at the dock area to survey what birds might be hanging out near Lake Lorraine\, too. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a relaxing evening bird walk along the Douglas L. Murray Agricultural Heritage Trail\, Route 177\, Rodman\, NY. The trail has two loops totaling 1.6 miles which highlight the agricultural nature of the property surrounding the Development Authority of the North Country’s solid waste management facility. The Murray Trail is available for year-round\, non-motorized recreational use. The Murray Trail is named for former Development Authority board member and chairman\, and former THTLT board member\, Doug Murray. \nWe’ll meet at the parking area one-quarter mile north of the solid waste management facility main entrance on Route 177 in the Town of Rodman and gather for brief introductions and birding tips. We’ll then take an easy walk along the trails through field and forest looking and listening for birds\, with frequent stops. SUMMARY:Tug Hill Traverse Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:THIS WORKDAY HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO FRIDAY\, JUNE 14th \nTwice a month\, from June to September\, volunteers will meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections as well as clear and mark the remaining sections of the historic Tug Hill Traverse Trail. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south\, and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. DESCRIPTION:Let’s go birding! Look\, listen and learn about birds by joining us for a relaxing evening bird walk at Constable Hall\, 5909 John St\, Constableville\, NY. \nConstable Hall is a historic house museum located in the Adirondack Tug Hill Region of Lewis County\, New York. This Federal style limestone mansion was built in the early 1800’s by members of the Constable family. The Hall’s beautiful garden and grounds have been meticulously cared for\, with a variety of habitats that attract a wide variety of birds. \nAfter meeting in the historic servants’ quarters building\, we’ll head outside for an easy\, slow walk looking and listening for birds. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and/or muddy\, and bring along some insect repellent\, just in case. \nYou may also want to add Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s free eBird (checklist keeper) and/or Merlin (bird ID) apps to your smart phone. DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered what bird that is singing in the woods? Come find out by joining us for a relaxing evening bird walk at Camp Zerbe\, 253 NYS Route 104\, Williamstown\, NY! Camp Zerbe is owned by Oswego County and is operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau\, division of Parks and Recreation. Oswego County has maintained and improved Camp Zerbe as a nature park as well as an educational and recreational resource for the citizens of Oswego County. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot for introductions\, then meander our way through open areas and along forested loop trails. Along the way\, we’ll share tips for finding\, identifying and observing spring and summer birds. We’ll make a stop at the dock area to survey what birds might be hanging out near Lake Lorraine\, too. This will be an easy\, slow walk through open grassy areas and forested trail habitats with frequent stops. DESCRIPTION:The Tug Hill Bird Quest is a perfect community science activity for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. It’s designed to help students and families within or near the Tug Hill region of New York State learn more about the birds that travel through and call Tug Hill home and is a great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. A free bird feeder\, birdseed and/or Tug Hill natural resource guide may be provided upon request and as available to teams requiring supplies in order to participate. \n\nRegister to participate no later than March 31st.\nReceive daily Bird of the Day emails with photos\, fun facts and identification tips April 1st through May 17th.\nTHTLT provides a free tally sheet for you to tally the birds that visit the feeders daily May 20th-24th and record the type and number of birds observed.\nStart adding seed to feeders any time before May 1st in order to allow the birds to find the food source.\nObserve your feeder station and record your observations every day May 20th through May 24th\, 2024.\nComplete and return your completed tally sheet no later than May 31st.\nA completed report will be sent out to participating teams and event sponsors the second week of June.\nEach team that returns a tally by May 31st is entered in a drawing to win a great pair of binoculars!\n\nFind Out More and Register here!

SUMMARY:Morning Bird Walk and Breeding Bird Survey
DESCRIPTION:THTLT and the North Country Bird Club will join Jeff Bolsinger\, New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III Northern Region Co-Coordinator\, for a morning bird walk at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd\, Watertown\, to learn about and survey for breeding birds at the sanctuary. The walk starts at 8:00 AM in the parking lot. Registrations are required\, space is limited. \nA Breeding Bird Atlas occurs every 20 years in New York for a five-year period. This third New York State atlas effort began in 2020\, and birders of all backgrounds are participating through 2024.  Breeding Bird Atlas surveys continue to improve understanding of changes in the distribution of breeding birds in New York State and provide the basis for more informed conservation and management of birds and their habitats on public and private lands. \nBird observations are entered into the NYS Breeding Bird Atlas portal on eBird free mobile app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology that allows online and offline collection of bird observations anywhere in the world. eBird is a free app\, and lets birders enter when\, where\, and how they went birding\, and then fill out a checklist of all the birds seen and heard during their outings. DESCRIPTION:Postponed from April 19th to  Friday\, April 26th due to inclement weather. \nCome and enjoy a twilight walk and owl prowl in the woods with THTLT at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary (31241 Middle Road\, Watertown\, NY). \nLearn about the ways animals are adapted to a low-light lifestyle\, look for all types of animal tracks and signs\, and look and listen for owls! \nOur outing will begin in the parking lot with a brief learning session to discuss animal adaptations and the owls we might encounter. Then we’ll take a walk on the woods trails to listen and look for owls\, and for activities along the way that explore how owls and other animals navigate in low to no light. \nBring along a flashlight or headlamp\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy waterproof boots or shoes.
