DESCRIPTION:Help us make progress on a historic Tug Hill hiking route – the Tug Hill Traverse Trail – and count yourself a vital part of the effort! \nTwice a month\, from June to September\, volunteers meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections of the trail as well as clear and mark remaining sections. With over 10 miles completed\, eventually the full trail will cover approximately 20 miles\, from Montague to Osceola\, through the amazing and remote core forest\, headwaters of the East Branch of Fish Creek. \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, a brimmed hat\, lightweight long pants and shirt sleeves\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south\, and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. We’ll be meeting in person in Watertown\, with an online option available for those who prefer to join from home. \nWhether you’re a longtime member or joining us for the first time\, we’d love to have you. Our Book & Beverage Club is a welcoming\, relaxed group that enjoys thoughtful conversations about books exploring nature\, wildlife\, environmental issues\, natural history\, and cultural history—especially topics connected to or relevant to the Tug Hill region. \nThere’s no pressure to attend every meeting or read every book. For each discussion\, we suggest two books\, and you’re welcome to read one\, both\, or simply come for the conversation. Participants are responsible for obtaining their own copies in the format they prefer\, whether print\, ebook\, or audiobook. \nThe club meets every other month\, alternating between Watertown and Lowville\, and every meeting is offered in a hybrid format so everyone can participate in the way that works best for them. Whether you’re a curious kid\, a nature-loving adult\, or a family looking for a new hobby to enjoy together\, this is a great way to start or expand your outdoor explorations. No experience is needed – just bring your curiosity and love of nature! \nThere is no charge for attending or for parking. \nWe’ll have a limited number of binoculars available for those without their own. \nYou may want to add Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s free eBird (checklist keeper) and/or Merlin (bird ID) apps to your smart phone prior to the program. Participants may choose to take part in one or both removal efforts. This event is also part of the Land Protectors Learning Experience. \nDate: Thursday\, July 23\, 2026\nTime: 9:00am – 3:00pm\nMeet Location: Montario Point Boat Launch in Ellisburg\, NY \nWater Chestnut Removal (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM)\nPlease arrive by 8:45 AM to prepare your watercraft and equipment for launch. Opening remarks and instructions will begin promptly at 9:00 AM. SUMMARY:Birding\, Bluebirds and Bingo at Constable Hall
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join us for a bird walk followed by information about bluebirds\, and a game of Bird Bingo at Constable Hall on Tuesday\, July 14th\, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. There is no fee for attending or for parking. \nFirst\, we’ll explore the Hall’s many bird habitat areas to look and listen for birds while sharing birding tips\, tricks and birding apps that come in handy. There should be plenty of activity as the migratory birds are returning! \nThen we’ll gather to learn about bluebirds\, nest boxes and nest box monitoring with Vici and Steven Diehl from the North Country Bird Club\, and finish with a fun round or two of Bird Bingo to reinforce our learning about the differences in field markings of common birds and win prizes! \nThis is a slow easy walk over stone dust\, grassy and leafy surfaces with two short uphill sections. Attendees are encouraged to bring their cell phone\, binoculars and curiosity about birds! DESCRIPTION:Come experience the peace of a deep woods hike in the heart of Tug Hill\, guided by Cindy Stewart of the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK)! This hike will start at the northern trailhead for the Tug Hill Traverse Trail in the Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area (Tug Hill WMA) east of Barnes Corners in the Town of Montague. We will hike south for about an hour\, or as long as hikers wish\, then return. \nRegistration is required\, as we will send details with a reminder to attendees closer to the date of the hike. There is no fee to attend or for parking. \nThe parking spot near the trailhead (43.69494343°N\, 75.65266844°W) is not marked. The trailhead itself is approximately a 45-minute drive from Watertown and a 25-minute drive from Lowville. \nCindy Stewart will meet attendees to caravan to the trailhead at these times and locations: \n9:15 am – Tug Hill State Forest Parking Lot\, 25841 NYS Rte 177\, Rodman\, and \n9:35 am – The Montague Inn\, 6765 Sears Pond Rd\, Lowville  \nThere may still be winter debris here and there along the trail\, as crews haven’t begun cleanup yet. Please check the weather for Montague before heading out and dress appropriately. Lightweight long pants and shirt sleeves are recommended. You’ll need good hiking shoes\, water\, maybe a small snack\, a brimmed hat and insect repellent. Bring a favorite walking stick if you’d like! \nTHTLT and ADK volunteers have been working for many years with multiple property owners to create and maintain this marked foot trail generally following the East Branch of Fish Creek from its headwaters as it flows south. Over ten miles of the trail have been completed\, from Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area (Tug Hill WMA) in the Town of Montague to beyond the Michigan Mills Road in the Town of West Turin. \nTrail work season begins in June with maintenance on the marked trail and clearing of the next leg south. Upon completion\, the trail will span approximately 20 gorgeous miles and have a southern trailhead near Osceola. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Salmon River Falls Unique Area\, 185 Falls Rd\, Richland\, NY on Friday\, March 20th from 10:00 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). Registration is required. There is no charge for attendance or parking. You may need snowshoes. \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. Dani is co-owner of Cross Island Farms and the Enchanted Edible Forest and has visited many Tug Hill libraries in past years with wisdom from her book The Home Scale Forest Garden. Now she will share even more in this locally-produced series. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Forest Park\, 10-24 Ripley Rd\, Camden\, NY on Thursday\, March 5th from 10:00 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). Registration is required. There is no charge for attendance or parking. You may need snowshoes. \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. If weather should turn severe and the event require rescheduling\, all registrants will be contacted by phone and email. DESCRIPTION:Come along on a guided twilight adventure\, looking and listening for owls at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary on Friday\, February 20th at 5:00 pm. Bring along a flashlight – we start in the light\, but it may be quite dark by the time we return to the parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Come along on a twilight exploration with quiet feet and ears perked at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd.\, Watertown\, on Saturday\, January 17th! While looking and listening for owls\, we’ll also scan for animal signs and learn about what special ways animals navigate at night. Registration is required. There is no charge for attendance or parking. \nWe’ll meet at 4:30 pm in the parking lot to gather and prepare for a leisurely walk through the forest. Short activities at stops along the way will help us learn about how owls and other animals thrive in low to no light. \nEveryone should dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots.
