DESCRIPTION:Perfect for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. A great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. \nEarly Bird Details\n\nSign up by December 31st.\nStart receiving free learning resources weekly\, beginning January 9th 2023.\n\nTeams fill their feeders no later than May 1st in order to allow the birds to find the food source. Then each team observes the feeders daily May 15th-19th and records the type and number of birds observed. After watching the feeder for the entire week\, tally the results and report your findings back to us. \nThe Tug Hill Bird Quest program is designed to help students and families learn more about the birds that call Tug Hill home. THTLT provides free birdseed and bird feeders upon request and as available\, donated by regional businesses\, to participating teams\, along with a bird identification poster\, data sheets and a free Tug Hill natural history guidebook. The outing will be dependent upon adequate snowfall. Participants are welcome to use their own skis or snowshoes. If needed\, BROEP can provide xc-skis\, snowshoes and associated equipment upon request free for up to 40 people. \nThe Potato Hill Farm campus in Oneida County\, offers over four miles of well-maintained trails across 170 acres of land. Head outside for a free\, family-friendly hike at the Development Authority of the North Country’s Murray Agricultural Heritage Trail in Rodman. If we get enough snow\, snowshoes or cross-country skis are welcome. \nHikers will meet at the Murray Trail parking area on NYS Route 177 at 10 am. The parking lot is located on the south side of the road\, west of the official entrance for the Development Authority and east of the Village of Rodman. Look for the brown Murray Trails trailhead sign\, our THTLT sandwich board sign\, and the white building set back from the parking area. SUMMARY:How Can I Protect Hemlock Trees from the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid?
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS POSTPONED TO A LATER DATE DUE TO PROBABILITY OF HEAVY SNOW AND UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS. Please stay tuned for a rescheduled date. Apologies for any inconvenience. \nJoin us for a guided walk at the James A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd.\, Watertown (located in the Town of Rutland) and learn to recognize and report Hemlock Woolly Adelgid HWA (or the lack thereof) – an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. This is the first of multiple informational survey outings we’ll be holding in the Tug Hill region this winter. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. Trainers will help participants learn how to identify the Eastern Hemlock\, survey for HWA and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). This first session will also be attended by WPBS Watertown\, as the station is putting together a piece on SLELO PRISM’s training and monitoring program with partners. DESCRIPTION:What if you’re out hiking on Tug Hill and your GPS device isn’t working (Hello\, Osceola)? What if you’re out hunting somewhere off-trail or in a remote location without cell service? Join us and Tug Hill Outfitters in learning how to use a map and compass to find your way in and out of the woods\, and decrease your chances of getting lost. \nEvent Details\n\nSunday\, November 13th\n1pm-4pm\nThis course will be held on a protected property on private land near Camden\, NY. The exact location will be sent to registrants via email the week of November 7th\nParking is limited to 8 vehicles\, so registration is required by Thursday\, November 10th\n\nIn this entry level course\, we’ll get back to basics. Learn how to read a compass and map\, then apply your skills by getting outside to locate hidden flags\, following a course that will test what you will have learned about land navigation. \nAttendees should bring a gallon zip lock bag or a map case to hold maps that will be provided. A few compasses will be available to borrow\, but it is recommended that if attendees have their own compass (especially if a base plate compass) that they bring their own. Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust (THTLT)\, the St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM)\, and NYS DEC Forest Health Specialist Maria MoskaLee will lead the program. \nEvent Details\n\nTuesday\, September 20th\n1pm-3pm\nJoseph A Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\nRegistration is required no later than 8 pm on Monday\, September 19th.\n\nBLD is spreading rapidly across the Northeastern U.S. and Canada\, affecting and killing both native and ornamental beech tree species. Associated with a nematode whose feeding causes dark bands in the leaves. Young trees can die in less than five years after the first signs of damage appear. BLD has only been discovered in recent years. In 2022\, it has been found in 14 new counties in New York\, for a total of 35 infected counties. DESCRIPTION:Let go of your worries during an easy paddle with us as we explore the West Branch of Fish Creek and Gifford Lake. \nEvent Details\n\nSaturday\, July 30th\n10:00 am- 12:00pm\nBring your own canoe or kayak\, or rent what you need. PFDs are required for all.\n\nOur trip will begin and end at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) public fishing parking area in Westdale\, located approximately 5 miles northwest of Camden\, and about 4.5 miles southeast of Williamstown on Route 13. When you reach Westdale\, turn north onto Cemetery Road and look for the DEC parking area on your right. \nTug Hill Outfitters is donating 10% of all equipment rental to Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust’s land protection and community programs fund. Solo recreational kayak rentals (13 total) are available for $20 per person.  There are also there two tandem (2-person) kayaks\, one 2-person canoe\, and one 3-person canoe available to rent for $30 each. For families with 3 or more people\, boat rentals are $15 each. If renting kayaks\, reservations and payment are required in advance of the event. Teams are welcomed as well!  A participant liability waiver is required for each individual who will be participating on-site. Registration fee is $25 per person. \nThe first race wave will begin at 9am\, with two waves following at 9:15am and 9:30am. When registering\, please select or your wave time. There is no time limit and this course is walker friendly. While we love your furry friends\, please leave them at home on race day. THTLT reserves the right to alter the number of participants per wave and wave times due to COVID conditions on race day. \nVirtual participation is welcome and available to anyone having to miss the in-person race. As the race is a fundraiser\, no refunds will be issued. The first 150 registered runner both virtual and in-person will receive a race day medal and swag package that will include an earth-friendly seed planting kit\, cloth tote bag\, and more. \nRunners and walkers alike will enjoy the challenging course\, consisting mostly of single-track trails through woods and across many streams. Traverse foot bridges\, log ladder bridges\, and water crossings while gaining over 345’ of elevation. DESCRIPTION:Join a series of guided walk and talks to learn to recognize and report hemlock woolly adelgid HWA- an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. Hemlocks are an important tree species that provide many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas.  To help raise awareness\, and encourage community members to get involved\, a series of guided hikes will be held each month beginning in December through March. SUMMARY:Hike to Protect Hemlocks- Forest Park
DESCRIPTION:Join a series of guided walk and talks to learn to recognize and report hemlock woolly adelgid HWA- an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. Hemlocks are an important tree species that provide many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas.  To help raise awareness\, and encourage community members to get involved\, a series of guided hikes will be held each month beginning in December through March.
