DESCRIPTION:Twice a month\, from June to September\, volunteers will meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections as well as clear and mark the remaining sections of the historic Tug Hill Traverse Trail. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south\, and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. SUMMARY:Evening Birding at Lowville Demonstration Forestry Area
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled Due to Chance of Severe Weather \nJoin us for a relaxing evening bird walk at the Lowville Demonstration Forestry Area\, Route 812\, Dadville\, NY. The Lowville Forestry Demonstration Area is located on 98 acres at the former NYS Lowville Tree Nursery. The nursery was in operation from approximately 1923 to 1971 and during that time\, a total of 530 million seedlings were produced. A demonstration forest was created here by planting trees together in blocks based on species.The property also contains an arboretum with more than 400 species of native and non-native trees\, shrubs\, perennials and fruit trees. This area highlights hardy species that can grow in the northern New York climate. \nWe’ll meet at the parking area on Route 812 just south of the NYSDEC Region 6 suboffice. We’ll then take an easy walk along the trails through field and forest looking and listening for birds\, with frequent stops. As we walk\, we’ll share more tips for finding\, identifying and observing spring and summer birds. \nSturdy shoes that can get wet are recommended. Trails are mowed grass and footpaths on primarily flat terrain. Bring along your binoculars and some insect repellent\, just in case. DESCRIPTION:The Tug Hill Bird Quest is a perfect community science activity for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. It’s designed to help students and families within or near the Tug Hill region of New York State learn more about the birds that travel through and call Tug Hill home and is a great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. A free bird feeder\, birdseed and/or Tug Hill natural resource guide may be provided upon request and as available to teams requiring supplies in order to participate. \n\nRegister to participate no later than March 31st.\nReceive daily Bird of the Day emails with photos\, fun facts and identification tips April 1st through May 17th.\nTHTLT provides a free tally sheet for you to tally the birds that visit the feeders daily May 20th-24th and record the type and number of birds observed.\nStart adding seed to feeders any time before May 1st in order to allow the birds to find the food source.\nObserve your feeder station and record your observations every day May 20th through May 24th\, 2024.\nComplete and return your completed tally sheet no later than May 31st.\nA completed report will be sent out to participating teams and event sponsors the second week of June.\nEach team that returns a tally by May 31st is entered in a drawing to win a great pair of binoculars!\n\nFind Out More and Register here!

SUMMARY:Morning Bird Walk and Breeding Bird Survey
DESCRIPTION:THTLT and the North Country Bird Club will join Jeff Bolsinger\, New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III Northern Region Co-Coordinator\, for a morning bird walk at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd\, Watertown\, to learn about and survey for breeding birds at the sanctuary. The walk starts at 8:00 AM in the parking lot. Registrations are required\, space is limited. \nA Breeding Bird Atlas occurs every 20 years in New York for a five-year period. This third New York State atlas effort began in 2020\, and birders of all backgrounds are participating through 2024.  Breeding Bird Atlas surveys continue to improve understanding of changes in the distribution of breeding birds in New York State and provide the basis for more informed conservation and management of birds and their habitats on public and private lands. \nBird observations are entered into the NYS Breeding Bird Atlas portal on eBird free mobile app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology that allows online and offline collection of bird observations anywhere in the world. eBird is a free app\, and lets birders enter when\, where\, and how they went birding\, and then fill out a checklist of all the birds seen and heard during their outings. DESCRIPTION:Did you ever run across footprints outside in the mud or snow and wonder what animal might have left it there? Come to the Western Town Library\, 9172 Main Street\, Westernville\, NY from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm and learn how to identify a sampling of animal tracks! We’ll start by reading the book\, The Hike\, then use materials in the library’s new Tug Hill Explorer Animal Tracks and Signs Backpack to learn the basics of animal tracks. Then we’ll head outside with the backpack to find what signs and tracks we can identify near the library. Bring your phone or camera to take pictures of our finds! This is the fourth of five informational survey outings being held in and near the Tug Hill region this winter in partnership with the St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM). \nThe following day\, Thursday\, February 15th\, is reserved as an alternate date in the case of weather that isn’t safe for travel. Please mark both dates on your calendar. We will hold the event if we get snow or a light rain and you will be notified of any changes prior to the event via the email you’ve provided. \nThe Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. DESCRIPTION:Perfect for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. A great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. \nEarly Bird Details\n\nSign up by December 31st.\nStart receiving free learning resources weekly\, beginning January 8th\, 2024. Resources include fun facts and learning activities to expand your understanding of and ability to identify the different types of birds you may see at or near your bird feeder this winter and spring.\nFill your feeder (no later than May 6th if new) to allow birds to find and start visiting your location.\nTally bird feeder observations May 20-24 with teams around the region.\n\nNo birding experience is required to participate! You’re free to contact us with questions about feeders and birds anytime. If you want\, we can schedule a virtual or in-person visit for your classroom or homeschool group as well. \nAll teams officially observe their feeders daily May 20th – 24th for up to 15 minutes a day and record the type and number of birds observed. After watching the feeder for the entire week\, they tally the results and report their findings back to us. \nThe Tug Hill Bird Quest program is designed to help students and families learn more about the birds that call Tug Hill home. All teams receive weekly Bird of the Day emails in April and May\, with Early Birds receiving additional resources January through April. \nA free tally sheet is provided for recording observations. Upon request\, a free bird identification poster\, Tug Hill Natural History Guide book\, and/or bird seed and a bird feeder may be provided to teams as available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Bird seed and feeders are donated to THTLT by regional businesses for teams needing them to participate in the Bird Quest. To date\, Carla has completed her 200-hour yoga teacher certification\, children’s yoga 95-hour teacher certification\, and is registered with the National Yoga Alliance for both areas of yoga. She has earned a MBSR-T certification\, (mindfulness-based stress reduction for teens) and has attended a multitude of trainings and classes in yoga and mindfulness. DESCRIPTION:Join us outside for an outdoor Saturday morning Flow Into Fall yoga session in a mowed meadow surrounded by woodland and gently flowing water\, to ease yourself through this fall season of transition.  Led by experienced certified yoga instructor Carla VanWormer\, this 75-minute yoga class incorporates simple flowing sequences to warm up the body\, as well as slower paced movements focusing on alignment\, strength\, balance\, and flexibility.  The class is suitable for all yoga levels. \n\n\n\n\n\nClass Fee:  $15 per person\, per class session\nTime : 9:30-10:45 am\nLocation: French Settlement Road Public Conservation Area\, Lorraine\nPlease bring your own yoga mat (or let us know if you need one)\, a bottle of water\, and an intention to enjoy a yoga practice together.\n\n\nThis is the first in a series of three outdoor yoga sessions being offered in September and October at THTLT’s French Settlement Road Public Conservation Area. \nOnce registered\, attendees will receive driving directions and a map via email. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Instructor: Carla has so much light to share. She is humbled and grateful to share the power of yoga and mindfulness with us\, as she has with hundreds of middle school students seeking calm amidst the tremendous pressures of growing up in today’s society. To date\, Carla has completed her 200-hour yoga teacher certification\, children’s yoga 95-hour teacher certification\, and is registered with the National Yoga Alliance for both areas of yoga. She has earned a MBSR-T certification\, (mindfulness-based stress reduction for teens) and has attended a multitude of trainings and classes in yoga and mindfulness. Over the next few months\, she will be finishing her required hours for a certification and will receive the honor to register with the National Yoga Alliance as a Prenatal and Postnatal yoga teacher (RPYT).  For Carla\, this is just the beginning of a lifelong commitment to learning\, practicing and sharing yoga with schools\, families and friends in yoga. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

Camp Zerbe is owned by Oswego County and is operated by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau\, division of Parks and Recreation. Owned and run as a summer camp by the Syracuse Boys’ Club until 1991\, Oswego County has maintained and improved Camp Zerbe as a nature park as well as an educational and recreational resource for the citizens of Oswego County. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot for introductions\, then meander our way through open areas and along forested loop trails. Along the way\, we’ll share tips for finding\, identifying and observing spring and summer birds. We’ll make a stop at the dock area to survey what birds might be hanging out near Lake Lorraine\, too. This will be an easy\, slow walk through open grassy areas and forested trail habitats with frequent stops. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and/or muddy are best\, and bring along some insect repellent\, just in case. DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n\nFriday\, August 11\, 2023\n6:00 – 8:00 pm\nBring your own canoe or kayak or rent what you need. PFDs are required for all.\n\nLet go of your worries during an easy evening paddle with us as we travel the West Branch of Fish Creek to Gifford Lake and back. This paddle offers great opportunities for photos and wildlife sightings. Gifford Lake is a small\, remote\, undeveloped lake aside from a single house. After paddling around and exploring the lake\, we’ll turn around and paddle downstream back to our starting point. Bring your own boat\, or you can rent one or more boats (see info below) for the trip. \nOur paddle will begin and end at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) public fishing parking area in Westdale\, located approximately 5 miles northwest of Camden\, and about 4.5 miles southeast of Williamstown on Route 13. When you reach Westdale\, turn north onto Cemetery Road and look for the DEC parking area on your right. \nRegister for the Paddle \nNeed to rent a single or tandem kayak? Email Tug Hill Outfitters at tughillhilladventures@gmail.com to let them know what you will need. They’ll send you a link to pay via Paypal or Venmo\, or arrange to pay them cash the day of the trip. They will deliver rental boats to the site\, so you don’t have to pick up and drop off your boat! Special rates for this trip\, too: $25 for a single kayak and $40 for a 2-person kayak. Whitaker Park offers one of Lewis County’s best views of the Black River Valley and the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. SUMMARY:Bird Quest 2023
DESCRIPTION:Perfect for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. A great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. \nTeams fill their feeders no later than May 1st in order to allow the birds to find the food source. Then each team observes the feeders daily May 15th-19th and records the type and number of birds observed. After watching the feeder for the entire week\, tally the results and report your findings back to us. \nThe Tug Hill Bird Quest program is designed to help students and families learn more about the birds that call Tug Hill home. THTLT provides free birdseed and a bird feeder upon request and as available\, donated by regional businesses\, to participating teams\, along with a tally sheet and a free copy of the Tug Hill Natural History Guide. Teams receive Bird of the Day emails with photos\, fun facts and identification tips about birds April 3rd through May 12. After observing feeders for the official event week\, teams complete the provided tally sheet and return it to THTLT by May 31st.
