DESCRIPTION:Come and enjoy a twilight walk and owl prowl in the woods with THTLT at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary (31241 Middle Road\, Watertown\, NY)\, located it the Town of Rutland. Learn about the ways animals are adapted to a low-light lifestyle\, look for all types of animal tracks and signs\, and look and listen for owls! \nThis is the first in a series of owl prowl twilight walks for 2025 – you can sign up for multiple dates and times when you register if you wish! \nOur outing will begin in the parking lot with brief introductions. Then we’ll take a walk on the woods trails looking and to listening for owls and other animals/animal signs. \nBring along a flashlight or headlamp\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy waterproof boots or shoes. Learn to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid invasive insect\, examine trees\, and report observations using your smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). Registration is required. There is no fee to attend. \nThe Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on can provide enough time to protect infested trees and help to stop the spread to new areas. Hemlock Woolly Adelgids insects can kill Eastern Hemlock trees. \nWe will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nSalmon River Falls Unique Area is owned and managed by New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation and encompasses 112 acres of land. The 110-foot Salmon River Falls and the scenic gorge are the popular attractions on this wonderful parcel of state land. \nThis is the third of five public outings to be hosted by THTLT and SLELO PRISM from October 2024 through February 2025. Upcoming walks will take place at the Trenton Greenbelt Trails (Holland Patent) in January\, and Forest Park (Camden) in February. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. DESCRIPTION:Have ever wondered what it would be like to be hiking alongside trees over one hundred years old? Come along with us as we take an autumn hike to explore one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. Naturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will lead this off-trail hike over moderately difficult terrain inside land designated as New York State Forest Preserve. This outing is open to the public at no charge\, thanks to our generous donors. Registration is required. \nPlan on wearing sturdy waterproof boots. Bring along your bag lunch/snacks and water. A long-sleeved overshirt option\, brimmed hat and bug repellent are recommended just in case. . \nWe will meet at the parking area on the Osceola-West Leyden Road (County Route 46) just west of the bridge over the Salmon River (street address approximately 1999 Osceola Road\, West Leyden\, NY 13489; Google Coordinates 43.489818\, -75.652058). DESCRIPTION:Cancelled Due to Chance of Severe Weather \nJoin us for a relaxing evening bird walk at the Lowville Demonstration Forestry Area\, Route 812\, Dadville\, NY. The Lowville Forestry Demonstration Area is located on 98 acres at the former NYS Lowville Tree Nursery. The nursery was in operation from approximately 1923 to 1971 and during that time\, a total of 530 million seedlings were produced. A demonstration forest was created here by planting trees together in blocks based on species.The property also contains an arboretum with more than 400 species of native and non-native trees\, shrubs\, perennials and fruit trees. This area highlights hardy species that can grow in the northern New York climate. \nWe’ll meet at the parking area on Route 812 just south of the NYSDEC Region 6 suboffice. We’ll then take an easy walk along the trails through field and forest looking and listening for birds\, with frequent stops. As we walk\, we’ll share more tips for finding\, identifying and observing spring and summer birds. \nSturdy shoes that can get wet are recommended. Trails are mowed grass and footpaths on primarily flat terrain. Bring along your binoculars and some insect repellent\, just in case. DESCRIPTION:THTLT and the North Country Bird Club will join Jeff Bolsinger\, New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III Northern Region Co-Coordinator\, for a morning bird walk at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd\, Watertown\, to learn about and survey for breeding birds at the sanctuary. The walk starts at 8:00 AM in the parking lot. Registrations are required\, space is limited. \nA Breeding Bird Atlas occurs every 20 years in New York for a five-year period. This third New York State atlas effort began in 2020\, and birders of all backgrounds are participating through 2024.  Breeding Bird Atlas surveys continue to improve understanding of changes in the distribution of breeding birds in New York State and provide the basis for more informed conservation and management of birds and their habitats on public and private lands. \nBird observations are entered into the NYS Breeding Bird Atlas portal on eBird free mobile app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology that allows online and offline collection of bird observations anywhere in the world. eBird is a free app\, and lets birders enter when\, where\, and how they went birding\, and then fill out a checklist of all the birds seen and heard during their outings. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk at Forest Park in Camden on Wednesday\, February 14th and learn to recognize and report Hemlock Woolly Adelgid HWA (or the lack thereof) – an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. This is the fourth of five informational survey outings being held in and near the Tug Hill region this winter in partnership with the St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM). \nThe following day\, Thursday\, February 15th\, is reserved as an alternate date in the case of weather that isn’t safe for travel. Please mark both dates on your calendar. We will hold the event if we get snow or a light rain and you will be notified of any changes prior to the event via the email you’ve provided. \nThe Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. DESCRIPTION:Starting 30 minutes before sunset\, enjoy a twilight walk and owl prowl with THTLT at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary (31241 Middle Road\, Watertown\, NY). We’ll learn about the ways animals are adapted to a low-light lifestyle\, look for all types of animal tracks and signs\, and look and listen for owls! \nThe outing will begin in the parking lot with a brief learning session to discuss animal adaptations and the owls we might encounter. SUMMARY:2024 Bird Quest: Early Bird
DESCRIPTION:Perfect for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. A great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. \nEarly Bird Details\n\nSign up by December 31st.\nStart receiving free learning resources weekly\, beginning January 8th\, 2024. Resources include fun facts and learning activities to expand your understanding of and ability to identify the different types of birds you may see at or near your bird feeder this winter and spring.\nFill your feeder (no later than May 6th if new) to allow birds to find and start visiting your location.\nTally bird feeder observations May 20-24 with teams around the region.\n\nNo birding experience is required to participate! You’re free to contact us with questions about feeders and birds anytime. If you want\, we can schedule a virtual or in-person visit for your classroom or homeschool group as well. \nAll teams officially observe their feeders daily May 20th – 24th for up to 15 minutes a day and record the type and number of birds observed. After watching the feeder for the entire week\, they tally the results and report their findings back to us. \nThe Tug Hill Bird Quest program is designed to help students and families learn more about the birds that call Tug Hill home. All teams receive weekly Bird of the Day emails in April and May\, with Early Birds receiving additional resources January through April. \nA free tally sheet is provided for recording observations. Upon request\, a free bird identification poster\, Tug Hill Natural History Guide book\, and/or bird seed and a bird feeder may be provided to teams as available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Bird seed and feeders are donated to THTLT by regional businesses for teams needing them to participate in the Bird Quest.
