Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. The Smith PCA contains large areas of old agricultural fields with grassland habitat that THTLT will be working to improve for pollinators over the next several years. SUMMARY:Spring Nature Walk at French Settlement Road Public Conservation Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a leisurely 1.5-mile guided spring nature walk at the French Settlement Road PCA\, 3836 French Settlement Road\, Lorraine\, NY. We’ll look for all kinds of cool springtime natural wonders along the way through rolling meadow and forest habitat and along streams and beaver ponds. \nThe French Settlement Road PCA’s 125 acres feature old field meadows\, mixed hardwood forests\, streams\, beaver ponds and wetlands that support a wide variety of plants and animals all year long. Historic farmstead sties\, stone wall remnants\, apple trees and more are evidence of the land’s agricultural past. The land was donated to THTLT by Dr. Marvin Reimer for people to enjoy as a protected nature area. DESCRIPTION:Did you ever run across footprints or other signs of animal activity outside in the mud or snow and wonder what animal might have left it there? Come to the Ainsworth Memorial Library in Sandy Creek\, NY on Saturday\, March 29 from 11:00 am to Noon and learn about how to figure out who made the footprints or other signs you’ve seen! We’ll start by reading the book\, The Hike\, then use materials in the library’s new Tug Hill Explorer Animal Tracking Backpack to learn the basics of animal tracks and signs. Then we’ll head outside with the backpack to look for anything we can find near the library. Bring your phone or camera to take pictures of our finds! SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Walk and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Valentine’s Day guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Camden’s Forest Park on Friday\, January 14th from 10 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees on and off the trail\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nParticipants should dress for the weather and expect some off-trail walking in order to survey trees. A ski pole or walking stick can help with walking off-trail as well as reaching branches above you. Sturdy waterproof footwear is recommended. If there is snow\, you are welcome to bring your snowshoes along. You might also want some water and/or a snack on hand. \nThe walk will take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. SUMMARY:Evening Birding at Lowville Demonstration Forestry Area
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled Due to Chance of Severe Weather \nJoin us for a relaxing evening bird walk at the Lowville Demonstration Forestry Area\, Route 812\, Dadville\, NY. The Lowville Forestry Demonstration Area is located on 98 acres at the former NYS Lowville Tree Nursery. The nursery was in operation from approximately 1923 to 1971 and during that time\, a total of 530 million seedlings were produced. A demonstration forest was created here by planting trees together in blocks based on species.The property also contains an arboretum with more than 400 species of native and non-native trees\, shrubs\, perennials and fruit trees. This area highlights hardy species that can grow in the northern New York climate. \nWe’ll meet at the parking area on Route 812 just south of the NYSDEC Region 6 suboffice. We’ll then take an easy walk along the trails through field and forest looking and listening for birds\, with frequent stops. As we walk\, we’ll share more tips for finding\, identifying and observing spring and summer birds. \nSturdy shoes that can get wet are recommended. Trails are mowed grass and footpaths on primarily flat terrain. Bring along your binoculars and some insect repellent\, just in case. DESCRIPTION:Twice a month\, from June to September\, volunteers will meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections as well as clear and mark the remaining sections of the historic Tug Hill Traverse Trail. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south\, and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. DESCRIPTION:The Tug Hill Bird Quest is a perfect community science activity for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. It’s designed to help students and families within or near the Tug Hill region of New York State learn more about the birds that travel through and call Tug Hill home and is a great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum. A free bird feeder\, birdseed and/or Tug Hill natural resource guide may be provided upon request and as available to teams requiring supplies in order to participate. \n\nRegister to participate no later than March 31st.\nReceive daily Bird of the Day emails with photos\, fun facts and identification tips April 1st through May 17th.\nTHTLT provides a free tally sheet for you to tally the birds that visit the feeders daily May 20th-24th and record the type and number of birds observed.\nStart adding seed to feeders any time before May 1st in order to allow the birds to find the food source.\nObserve your feeder station and record your observations every day May 20th through May 24th\, 2024.\nComplete and return your completed tally sheet no later than May 31st.\nA completed report will be sent out to participating teams and event sponsors the second week of June.\nEach team that returns a tally by May 31st is entered in a drawing to win a great pair of binoculars!\n\nFind Out More and Register here!

SUMMARY:Morning Bird Walk and Breeding Bird Survey
DESCRIPTION:THTLT and the North Country Bird Club will join Jeff Bolsinger\, New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III Northern Region Co-Coordinator\, for a morning bird walk at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31241 Middle Rd\, Watertown\, to learn about and survey for breeding birds at the sanctuary. The walk starts at 8:00 AM in the parking lot. Registrations are required\, space is limited. \nA Breeding Bird Atlas occurs every 20 years in New York for a five-year period. This third New York State atlas effort began in 2020\, and birders of all backgrounds are participating through 2024.  Breeding Bird Atlas surveys continue to improve understanding of changes in the distribution of breeding birds in New York State and provide the basis for more informed conservation and management of birds and their habitats on public and private lands. \nBird observations are entered into the NYS Breeding Bird Atlas portal on eBird free mobile app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology that allows online and offline collection of bird observations anywhere in the world. eBird is a free app\, and lets birders enter when\, where\, and how they went birding\, and then fill out a checklist of all the birds seen and heard during their outings.
