DESCRIPTION:Come along on a guided twilight adventure\, looking and listening for owls during a leisurely walk at THTLT’s French Settlement Road Public Conservation Area\, 3836 French Settlement Road\, Lorraine\, NY. At stops along the way\, we’ll consider the ways that nocturnal animals live their lives without light. \nDress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots – if there is enough snow\, feel free to bring your snowshoes! Bring along a flashlight – we start in the light\, but it may be quite dark by the time we return to the parking lot. If you have a red light setting or red filter for your flashlight\, it will help to retain our night vision.  We’ll have snacks and extra water available for anyone who needs it. \nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Old Growth Forest Hike
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be hiking among trees almost 200 hundred years old? Come along with us as we take an autumn hike exploring one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. Naturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will lead this off-trail hike over moderately difficult terrain inside land designated as New York State Forest Preserve. This outing is open to the public at no charge\, thanks to our generous donors. Registration is required. \nMeet at the parking area on the Osceola-West Leyden Road (County Route 46) just west of the bridge over the Salmon River (street address approximately 1999 Osceola Road\, West Leyden\, NY 13489; Google Coordinates 43.489818\, -75.652058). NOTE: THERE IS NO GPS RECEPTION IN OSCEOLA. Please print the directions/maps we send you prior to heading out to the hike. You should wear sturdy waterproof boots\, dress for the weather and bring along your bag lunch/snacks and water. SUMMARY:Beech Leaf Disease Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided nature walk and survey training session with SLELO PRISM at the stunning Salmon River Falls Unique Area in Richland\, NY\, where we will focus on the American Beech tree and its newest nemesis: Beech Leaf Disease! You can make a difference by helping scientists track the spread of this disease. \nThis walk is open to all ages. There is no fee for parking or to attend. Registration is required for all to receive important updates and weather-related cancellations. \nWe’ll gather in the parking area before heading out on the Upper Falls Trail\, a scenic one-mile path along the north side of the river to Dam Road. Along the way\, enjoy breathtaking views of the gorge and the iconic 100-foot waterfall. \nYou’ll first learn how to identify American Beech trees and all about how they play an important role in our Tug Hill forests. SUMMARY:Traverse Trail Work Day 2025 Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:Twice a month\, from June through September\, volunteers will meet in the heart of Tug Hill and work together to maintain current sections as well as clear and mark the remaining sections of the historic Tug Hill Traverse Trail. We invite you to be a part of it! \nVolunteers meet at the day’s designated location at 10:00 am and work until 2:00 pm. Stay for an hour\, stay for the day – it’s all good. \nWe’ll email those signed up for each date a few days prior to give the day’s meeting location\, suggest what kinds of tools to bring if available\, and provide driving directions and a map. Work gloves\, head protection\, insect repellent\, sturdy hiking/work shoes\, water and a brown bag lunch/snacks are recommended. \nTug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust has partnered for several years with the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club to establish this historic 20-mile north/south hiking trail through the heart of Tug Hill. The Tug Hill Traverse Trail extends from the DEC’s Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area on the north to the West Leyden Osceola Rd on the south and generally follows the East Branch of Fish Creek. Historic farmstead sties\, stone wall remnants\, apple trees and more are evidence of the land’s agricultural past. The land was donated to THTLT by Dr. Marvin Reimer for people to enjoy as a protected nature area. Come to the Ainsworth Memorial Library in Sandy Creek\, NY on Saturday\, March 29 from 11:00 am to Noon and learn about how to figure out who made the footprints or other signs you’ve seen! We’ll start by reading the book\, The Hike\, then use materials in the library’s new Tug Hill Explorer Animal Tracking Backpack to learn the basics of animal tracks and signs. Then we’ll head outside with the backpack to look for anything we can find near the library. Bring your phone or camera to take pictures of our finds! DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Valentine’s Day guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Camden’s Forest Park on Friday\, January 14th from 10 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees on and off the trail\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nParticipants should dress for the weather and expect some off-trail walking in order to survey trees. A ski pole or walking stick can help with walking off-trail as well as reaching branches above you. Sturdy waterproof footwear is recommended. If there is snow\, you are welcome to bring your snowshoes along. You might also want some water and/or a snack on hand. \nThe walk will take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. SUMMARY:Great Bear Recreation Area Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Walk and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Great Bear Recreation Area (Great Bear Rd\, Fulton) on Friday\, November 15th from 10 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nGreat Bear Recreation Area\, located at Great Bear Road along County Route 57 south of Fulton\, is a public recreation area open year-round dawn to dusk for non-motorized recreation. The area host 11 miles of rustically maintained trails\, with wooden bridges over streams. Parking is free. For more information\, visit: Friends of Great Bear \nThis is the second of five public outings to be hosted by THTLT and SLELO PRISM from October 2024 through February 2025. Upcoming walks will take place at Salmon River Falls Unique Area (Richland) in December\, Trenton Greenbelt Trails (Holland Patent) in January\, and Forest Park (Camden) in February. \nThe walk will still take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk. SUMMARY:Old Growth Forest Hike
DESCRIPTION:Have ever wondered what it would be like to be hiking alongside trees over one hundred years old? Come along with us as we take an autumn hike to explore one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. Naturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will lead this off-trail hike over moderately difficult terrain inside land designated as New York State Forest Preserve. This outing is open to the public at no charge\, thanks to our generous donors. Registration is required. \nPlan on wearing sturdy waterproof boots. Bring along your bag lunch/snacks and water. A long-sleeved overshirt option\, brimmed hat and bug repellent are recommended just in case. . \nWe will meet at the parking area on the Osceola-West Leyden Road (County Route 46) just west of the bridge over the Salmon River (street address approximately 1999 Osceola Road\, West Leyden\, NY 13489; Google Coordinates 43.489818\, -75.652058).
