We invite you to explore one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. \nEvent Details\n\nSaturday\, October 9th\n10am\nWe will meet at the parking area on the Osceola-West Leyden Road (County Route 46) just west of the bridge over the Salmon River (street address approximately 1999 Osceola Road\, West Leyden\, NY 13489; Google Coordinates 43.489818\, -75.652058).\nPlease note that there is no cell phone reception at this location. Please screen shot or print your map and directions before heading out\nBring along a brown bag lunch\, water\, dress for the weather\, and wear comfortable\, sturdy hiking boots.\n\nNaturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will be leading this hike. Plan on wearing sturdy boots\, as we will be doing off-trail hiking over moderately difficult terrain. DESCRIPTION:Let go of your worries during an easy paddle with us! \nEvent Details\n\nSunday\, August 22nd\n10am – 2pm\nPaddlers will meet at the parking area on the corner of Churchill and St. Mary’s Pond Rd in the Happy Valley Wildlife Management Area\nDO NOT USE GPS/Google to navigate from the east\, as roads that go through the WMA are very rough and sometimes impassable.\n\nWe will explore St. Mary’s Pond in the Happy Valley Wildlife Management Area (WMA)\, Oswego County. Registration is required for planning purposes. Led by THTLT board member and skilled naturalist Bob McNamara\, we may explore additional nearby ponds\, should time and interest allow. \nBring your kayak or canoe\, life vest (PFD)\, lunch/snacks\, water\, and sunscreen. Life vests are required for all boaters. \nTurn north onto Churchill Road (opposite Crim Road) from County Route 26 between Parish (west) and Williamstown (east). DESCRIPTION:Bring yourself or the family\, and join us for a fun paddling day on the West Branch of Fish Creek! \nEvent Details\n\nSaturday\, July 31st\nChoose to attend 10am-noon OR 1pm-3pm\n\nTug Hill Outfitters of Williamstown and Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust are partnering up to provide equipment rentals\, kayaking instruction and trip guides for an easy paddle from the Westdale\, NY fishing access site to Gifford Lake and back (~1.5 hrs round trip). Those with their own canoes or kayaks are also welcome to join in. \nTug Hill Outfitters is generously donating 10% of all equipment rental to Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust’s land protection and community programs fund. Solo recreational kayak rentals (13 total) are available for $20 per person. Also there is one tandem (2-person) kayak\, one 2-person canoe\, and one 3-person canoe available for $30 each. For families with 3 or more people\, boat rentals are $10 each. Credit card and PayPal options are available\, and NYS sales tax will be added at time of booking. SUMMARY:Pedaling on Boonville's Black River Feeder Canal
DESCRIPTION:Take a relaxing bike ride along the historic Black River Feeder Canal! \nEvent Details\n\nSaturday\, July 24th\nBeginning at 10:00 am\nWe’ll meet you with your bike at the northeast side of the covered bridge in Erwin Park\, NYS Route 12\, Boonville\, where the towpath trail begins. Pedal as far as you like\, or ride the full 20-mile round trip all the way to Forestport and back\n\nThis quiet trip through woods and fields on a dirt/gravel path uses what used to be the towpath for the Boonville to Forestport Feeder Canal. Hybrid bikes work best for this trail. There are occasional potholes\, and several road crossings with gates. Bring water\, lunch and/or snack if you’d like. The Forestport Diner and Campbell’s Diner are both easily accessible in Forestport if you prefer to eat there. Participants may wish to visit the Boonville Black River Canal Museum after the bike ride. The museum is located across NYS Route 12 from Erwin Park\, on the corner of Main Street just south of the covered bridge after the bike ride. \nTo get to our starting point in Boonville: From the north\, take NYS Route 12 south to Boonville\, turn left onto Park Drive into Erwin Park\, then left to park near the covered bridge. From Rome\, follow Route 46 north to Boonville. Turn right on Schuyler Street and then right on Route 12 south. Turn left on Park Drive into Erwin Park\, then left to park near the covered bridge. SUMMARY:Volunteer Trail Day at the Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:  \nWant to lend a hand and get some fresh air? Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust invites you to join in a trail maintenance day on Saturday\, June 5th\, 2021 at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary\, 31827 Middle Road\, Rutland from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in honor of National Trails Day. Families and children are encouraged to attend! Spend 30 minutes\, an hour or more with us – all help is appreciated. \nWe’ll be clearing the sanctuary trails of winter debris\, picking up litter\, and making sure everything is in good condition for hiking. Please wear sturdy boots and comfortable work clothes. Pack a brown bag lunch\, water in a reusable bottle\, sunscreen\, bug dope\, and a bee sting kit if appropriate. Bring your favorite loppers and gloves. THTLT will provide extra tools and gloves for volunteers. All skill levels are welcome – we have a lot of work! DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is now closed \nPerfect for Families\, Classrooms\, Homeschool Groups\, Youth Groups or anyone interested in observing birds in the Tug Hill region. A great activity to incorporate into any part of a STREAM learning curriculum \nThis spring’s official observation week is May 17th through May 21st. \nTeams fill their feeders no later than April 30th in order to allow the birds to find the food source. Then each team observes the feeders daily May 17th-21st and record the type and number of birds observed. After watching the feeder for the entire week\, tally the results and report your findings back to us. \nThe Tug Hill Bird Quest program is designed to help students and families learn more about the birds that call Tug Hill home. THTLT provides free birdseed and bird feeders\, donated by regional businesses\, to participating teams\, along with a bird identification poster\, data sheets and a free Tug Hill natural history guidebook. SUMMARY:Tug Hill Soggy Sneaker 5K
DESCRIPTION:** The deadline to register for this event is Saturday\, April 17th** \nDust off your sneakers and join us for the Tug Hill Soggy Sneaker 5K trail race on Saturday\, April 24th at 9:00 am at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary in Rutland. \nThis challenging trail race consists mostly of single-track wooded trails that will take you across many streams and wildlife areas. You will traverse foot bridges\, log ladder bridges\, and water crossings while gaining over 345’ of elevation. As the location is an active wildlife sanctuary\, expect terrain that accommodates wildlife habitat. Held in late April\, this race could be mostly snow covered\, or wet and leafy spring mud trails (that’s part of the excitement)! \nThe Race will begin at 9am\, and will follow in waves every 10 minutes (10 runners per wave) as to accommodate social distancing guidelines. There is no time limit and this course is walker friendly. While we love your furry friends\, please leave them at home on race day. Virtual participation is welcome. SUMMARY:Guided Hike to learn how to help protect Hemlock Trees from Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:You can help protect Hemlock Trees from Invasive Species! Join us and the St. Lawrence-Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO-PRISM) for a guided hike to search for and learn how to report sightings of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (the invasive insect threatening Hemlock Trees) on Saturday\, March 13th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Trenton Greenbelt Trails near Barneveld.  \nHemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) kills hemlock trees. Hemlocks are a key tree species for healthy forests in the Tug Hill region and elsewhere\, and your efforts can make a difference in preventing the spread of this insect. During this field session\, you’ll learn how to identify Eastern Hemlock\, its role in the forest\, how to perform early detection surveys\, how to report observations using iMapInvasives mobile app\, and how to become a volunteer monitor for THTLT and SLELO. \nRegistration is required. Masks are mandatory\, and attendees will social distance in conjunction with COVID19 recommendations. DESCRIPTION:Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust (THTLT) invites you to come learn about and prowl for owls on Friday\, February 26th at 5:00 pm at the Joseph A. Blake Wildlife Sanctuary in Rutland. We’ll start by learning a bit about the owls we might encounter\, then take a twilight walk to listen and look! This year’s owl prowls are free for the public\, thanks to generous support from GYMO and Cross Island Farms. Registration is required no later than Thursday\, February 25th. Attendance is limited. Masks are required.  \nWe’ll start in the parking lot at 31270 Middle Road\, in Rutland\, NY. Bring along a flashlight or headlamp\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy boots or shoes. If there is enough snow\, and you have them\, you are welcome to use snowshoes. The land trust also has a limited number of snowshoes for children and adults available upon request for use during our outings. \nDue to high demand this event is currently full. DESCRIPTION:Please note new date\, Tuesday\, August 21.  Celebrate the end of summer with THTLT\, and enjoy one more paddle before the weather turns to fall. Join executive director Linda Garrett\, for a gentle 2-3 mile paddle along the Black River in Watertown. Plan to meet up at the Handicap Boat Launch off Eastern Boulevard. All skill levels of paddlers are welcome on this post-work adventure. \nPlease bring your kayak or canoe\, PFD\, headlamp\, and bug dope. DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun\, relaxing way to unwind after a long day at work? Join Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust (THTLT) for a series of Three Easy Evening Paddles this summer. All levels of paddling experience from beginner to advanced are welcome on these 2-3 mile paddles. \nWe’ll be kicking off the summer with a paddle in the Happy Valley Wildlife Management area\, led by Tug Hill naturalist and artist Bob McNamara. \nPlease bring your kayak or canoe\, PFD\, headlamp\, and bug dope. The Land Trust will provide extra water and snacks. \nDriving Directions: From County Route 26 turn onto Churchill Road in Altmar. Meet at the kiosk on Churchill Road.

SUMMARY:Kids Nature Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join local photographer Emmanuel Vaucher\, and Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust for a FREE two-part Nature Photography Workshop for Kids. Vaucher will work one-on-one with students\, and as always questions and creativity are encouraged. There is no set age range for students\, we only ask that participants can stay focused and work independently during the two-hour workshop. Regarding cameras any and all are welcome. Bring whatever your kid uses most often whether it’s an iPhone or DSLR. A note about weather\, this workshop will be held rain or shine and will not be rescheduled if cancelled. This free workshop is limited to 15 children and their parents or chaperones.
