SUMMARY:Forest Hike on the Tug Hill Traverse Trail
DESCRIPTION:Come experience the peace of a deep woods hike in the heart of Tug Hill\, guided by Cindy Stewart of the Black River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK)! This hike will start at the northern trailhead for the Tug Hill Traverse Trail in the Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area (Tug Hill WMA) east of Barnes Corners in the Town of Montague. We will hike south for about an hour\, or as long as hikers wish\, then return. \nRegistration is required\, as we will send details with a reminder to attendees closer to the date of the hike. There is no fee to attend or for parking. \nThe parking spot near the trailhead (43.69494343°N\, 75.65266844°W) is not marked. The trailhead itself is approximately a 45-minute drive from Watertown and a 25-minute drive from Lowville. \nCindy Stewart will meet attendees to caravan to the trailhead at these times and locations: \n9:15 am – Tug Hill State Forest Parking Lot\, 25841 NYS Rte 177\, Rodman\, and \n9:35 am – The Montague Inn\, 6765 Sears Pond Rd\, Lowville  \nThere may still be winter debris here and there along the trail\, as crews haven’t begun cleanup yet. Please check the weather for Montague before heading out and dress appropriately. Lightweight long pants and shirt sleeves are recommended. You’ll need good hiking shoes\, water\, maybe a small snack\, a brimmed hat and insect repellent. Bring a favorite walking stick if you’d like! \nTHTLT and ADK volunteers have been working for many years with multiple property owners to create and maintain this marked foot trail generally following the East Branch of Fish Creek from its headwaters as it flows south. Over ten miles of the trail have been completed\, from Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area (Tug Hill WMA) in the Town of Montague to beyond the Michigan Mills Road in the Town of West Turin. \nTrail work season begins in June with maintenance on the marked trail and clearing of the next leg south. Upon completion\, the trail will span approximately 20 gorgeous miles and have a southern trailhead near Osceola. At stops along the way\, we’ll consider the ways that nocturnal animals live their lives without light. \nDress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots – if there is enough snow\, feel free to bring your snowshoes! Bring along a flashlight – we start in the light\, but it may be quite dark by the time we return to the parking lot. If you have a red light setting or red filter for your flashlight\, it will help to retain our night vision.  We’ll have snacks and extra water available for anyone who needs it. \nRegistration is required. Come along with us as we take an autumn hike exploring one of the most remote\, beautiful old growth forests on Tug Hill. Naturalist and outdoorsman\, Zach Wakeman will lead this off-trail hike over moderately difficult terrain inside land designated as New York State Forest Preserve. This outing is open to the public at no charge\, thanks to our generous donors. Registration is required. \nMeet at the parking area on the Osceola-West Leyden Road (County Route 46) just west of the bridge over the Salmon River (street address approximately 1999 Osceola Road\, West Leyden\, NY 13489; Google Coordinates 43.489818\, -75.652058). NOTE: THERE IS NO GPS RECEPTION IN OSCEOLA. Please print the directions/maps we send you prior to heading out to the hike. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided nature walk and survey training session with SLELO PRISM at the stunning Salmon River Falls Unique Area in Richland\, NY\, where we will focus on the American Beech tree and its newest nemesis: Beech Leaf Disease! You can make a difference by helping scientists track the spread of this disease. \nThis walk is open to all ages. There is no fee for parking or to attend. Registration is required for all to receive important updates and weather-related cancellations. \nWe’ll gather in the parking area before heading out on the Upper Falls Trail\, a scenic one-mile path along the north side of the river to Dam Road. Along the way\, enjoy breathtaking views of the gorge and the iconic 100-foot waterfall. \nYou’ll first learn how to identify American Beech trees and all about how they play an important role in our Tug Hill forests. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this last portion of our Healthy Habitat series for June: an in-person field trip on Saturday\, June 7th with Cierra Williams\, Horticulture and Natural Resources Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County\, at the David S. Smith Public Conservation Area (Smith PCA)\, 25775 Taylor Rd.\, Evans Mills. The Smith PCA contains large areas of old agricultural fields with grassland habitat that THTLT will be working to improve for pollinators over the next several years. SUMMARY:Spring Nature Walk at French Settlement Road Public Conservation Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a leisurely 1.5-mile guided spring nature walk at the French Settlement Road PCA\, 3836 French Settlement Road\, Lorraine\, NY. We’ll look for all kinds of cool springtime natural wonders along the way through rolling meadow and forest habitat and along streams and beaver ponds. \nThe French Settlement Road PCA’s 125 acres feature old field meadows\, mixed hardwood forests\, streams\, beaver ponds and wetlands that support a wide variety of plants and animals all year long. Historic farmstead sties\, stone wall remnants\, apple trees and more are evidence of the land’s agricultural past. The land was donated to THTLT by Dr. Marvin Reimer for people to enjoy as a protected nature area. The property’s trails are open dawn to dusk daily for hiking\, snowshoeing\, cross-country skiing and wildlife observation. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Calling All Tug Hill Animal Track Explorers!
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever run across footprints or other signs of animal activity outside in the mud or snow and wonder what animal might have left it there? Come to the Ainsworth Memorial Library in Sandy Creek\, NY on Saturday\, March 29 from 11:00 am to Noon and learn about how to figure out who made the footprints or other signs you’ve seen! We’ll start by reading the book\, The Hike\, then use materials in the library’s new Tug Hill Explorer Animal Tracking Backpack to learn the basics of animal tracks and signs. Then we’ll head outside with the backpack to look for anything we can find near the library. Bring your phone or camera to take pictures of our finds! SUMMARY:Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Walk and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Valentine’s Day guided Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) Walk and tree survey at Camden’s Forest Park on Friday\, January 14th from 10 am to Noon. We’ll take an easy walk\, stopping at points along the way with THTLT and SLELO PRISM (St. Lawrence-Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) staff to learn how to recognize Eastern Hemlock trees\, examine the trees on and off the trail\, and report observations using their smartphone through a free mobile application called iMapInvasives (a community science tool). \nHWA is an invasive insect that kills hemlock trees. The Eastern Hemlock is a key tree species found throughout Tug Hill that provides many benefits for people and nature. Detecting the presence of HWA early on provides enough time to protect infested trees and helps to stop the spread to new areas. It is easier to survey for HWA in colder months\, as the tiny insects form a woolly-looking ball of insulation around themselves that makes them more visible. \nParticipants should dress for the weather and expect some off-trail walking in order to survey trees. A ski pole or walking stick can help with walking off-trail as well as reaching branches above you. Sturdy waterproof footwear is recommended. If there is snow\, you are welcome to bring your snowshoes along. You might also want some water and/or a snack on hand. \nThe walk will take place in light rain or snow. We will monitor weather right up to the morning of our walk.
